I have recently replaced my old Raymarine Mk1 wheel pilot with a Mk2. I am very disappointed and irritated by the unpleasant noise it makes compared to the old one. The old one made a not unpleasant mechanical noise of something that was well engineered - this new one makes a nasty squeaking plasticky sound. Will it get better as it beds in?

The one we inherited made a nasty rattly plasticky sound, though I don't remember squeaking. The clutch lever needed a loop of rope to keep it engaged (common problem), and in boisterous conditions it sometimes lacked the power to turn the wheel. Last winter I splashed out the £550 and few hours' work to convert to a below-decks drive and I couldn't be happier with it.
