It seems that one has to initialise a micro SD card in a compatible chartplotter (Axiom/Element or whatever) before one can download charts to the card using a PC. Is that the case?

A few months ago I installed an upgrade to my B&G Vulcan from SD card and it was fussy about the formatting of the card.

I found this post at CruisersForum and I remember needing to use Disk Utility (on my MacBook) to reformat the card before it worked. I assume I followed the advice to format the card FAT32 not exFAT, but I can't remember if it was as simple as that.

It looks like Raymarine is the exact same - I speculate both brands of plotters and Android-based, and this is related to licensing / Microsoft's patent on FAT.

They write something on to the mSD so that cards can't be cloned or generated. They have to come from a Raymarine dealer. I've just been through this with them..it also gives a WIN10 error message when they are inserted, it wants to repair or fix them which proves that something has been done to the card.
