I am fitting a high definition sounder with the associated processor which will display bottom contours (and hopefully wrecks and things of interest to divers) on an E-series plotter.

This combination will also display depth on an ST60+ depth instrument.

However, if the signal processor and/or the plotter falls over, I still need to see depth on the ST60.

Official opinions seem divided as to whether the ST60 will drive the sounder transducer in the absence of the processor.

Anybody had any experience of this please?

I have requested a formal response from Raymarine (i.e. by letter) but have not yet received a reply.

It is the black box processor you have to worry about, that is putting the information out on the HSB and Seatalk. You can prove that by not turning on the E-series.

like jimg said its the processor which is most important if that goes you can't do anything but if thats still running st60 will work. Thats the verdict from my bro who is product assurance engineer at raymarine

That's two say it does and two say it doesn't!

The Raymarine engineer I spoke to reckoned that if the processor is off (switched off or U/S) the ST60 reverts to a master mode.

Perhaps there will be a demo at SBS to prove the point.

Thanks for the responses.

That's what I implied? I have a friend with this setup and it works! As long as the processor and transducer are on and working you are fine. It does not matter if either the E-series or ST60 are off, but the ST60 MUST be set as a slave.

or ST60 are off,

Did you mean the processor (being off)? If the ST60 is off, it ain't going to display anything!

I don't have the engineer's name but he canvassed office opinion while I was on the line. In detail he claimed that the ST60 would detect the "presence" (i.e. on and working) of the processor (DSM300) and slave itself to its output. However, if the DSM300 was not operational, the ST60 would assume the rôle of master and display depth.

The issue is quite important especially near the shore when the elcetronics are dodgy.
