A two part question, I have a Raymarine 240 VHF with an external speaker with volume control (active) . The volume has become quite faint, could the be the speaker giving problems or the actual VHF?
Second part, can I replace it with a passive speaker, the active ones are stupidly expensive.
Any thoughts appreciated.

1. no idea, doubt it would be the actual VHF which is somewhere safe and dry below tbh, my bet would be the speaker exposed to the elements.
2. active speaker means onboard amplification. So your active speaker gets a low level pre-amp signal (think RCA jacks in hi fi terms) has a circuit for the volume pot and then goes to an amplifier. Unless it's some very custom and convoluted layout used by Raymarine (cannot think of reasons to do so) it will be possible to replace. But wont be easy as you need an IP67 (or whatever) speaker and a similar rating volume pot plus an enclosure to put the circuitry and amplifier in it and stuff it somewhere behind the dash. Unless you are a real PBO I doubt it's worth it.

OK thanks, that sounds like I may have to bite the bullet and get a replacement with the volume pot, I didn't realise its quit a complicated bit of kit. Cheers Nigel

The Raymarine active speakers are sometimes on eBay, so worth a look.
The volume control broke on ours - fortunately stuck on a medium volume but hoping to replace with working version
Yes I have been looking, I guess between now and start of next season I may find one, cheers.
