Yesterday I managed to successfully connect my E7d to my SH GX2200e radio for the AIS feed, but struggling with a couple of settings even though I've tried to work through the manual.

First one - is there any way of turning off the AIS alarms? I'm based in Dover and as soon as I put the plotter on the thing goes in to numerous alarms due to "dangerous" AIS targets detected which is of course the ferries.

Also, is there any way I can set it up so that vessel names are automatically displayed on the chart instead of just the boat symbol? Obviously I know by clicking on the target I can get that info but I'd like the info there by default.

Cheers

You should be able to disable the AIS "dangerous target" alarm in the menu. Have you checked the manual? Are you running the latest Lighthouse software?

I don't think your Raymarine plotter can display vessel names automatically - should have bought a Garmin!

Yes, I've been scouring through the manual regarding the AIS alarms, but some of the options they describe for some reason do not appear to be present on the plotter (according to the manual I'm supposed to be able to connect it to the wifi in the marina, but when I follow the instructions the options are not there).

Regarding the firmwhere, I'm not sure but will check. It was only installed new late last year so I'd hope so.

You can certainly turn off alarms for AIS as well as change the range it operates in. I often let it display the 1 mile ring in red, which is handy for quick reference. I don't have my machine to hand and am a bit rusty at this time of year but it may be buried somewhere in Systems or Customise. The one I usually have difficulty finding is Silent Mode. Some of the functions appear under Targets where I wouldn't expect them, but they're all there.

The AIS alarms can be switched off from the Setup Menu - Setup / Alarms / Safety Alarms

See section 8 of the Lighthouse Software version 17 manual (if not on latest version, worth updating e7 and AIS software to v17)

I have the manual downloaded onto Dropbox and therefore the iPad for ease of reference

I turned off the audible AIS alarm on my e7 when were following another boat (also with AIS) . The alarm was sounding all too frequently.
The collision targets flash red - that's good enough for me.
Although there is a buddy list the buddies still cause an AIS collision alarm.

The trouble with the buddies list is that the button for putting a vessel on it is next to one I used all the time, so a lot of passing craft get put on the list and have to be taken off again, which means another trawl through the menu. I think it's under Targets.

From looking at it, I think the issue is what it classifies as dangerous targets which it would seem I can't turn off. Also I have read and re-read the alarms info already in section 8 and there is only the option to adjust the cpa alarms not switch them off completely.

I only setup the AIS yesterday so guess its just going to take some time to setup how I want. When I'm next down on the boat I'll have another go.

What's section 8? Are you looking at the correct manual? If you have the latest Lighthouse version, isn't it something like Homescreen > Set-up > Alarms > Safety Alarms > Dangerous AIS targets.

Well, i have managed to disable the alarms, although I'm not sure how. At least it done though.

What I have however discovered, is that although the unit was only installed in November from new, the software is version 12 and according to the Raymarine website we are up to version 17. When I look back at all the different releases since my version 12 there is all the functionality added I've read about in the manual and have been trying to find so that's solved that problem too.

Needless to say, I'll be doing a system update as soon as I've worked out how to back up all my settings first.

Cheers

The trouble is that there's loads of unsold stock lying on shelves around the country, sometimes for years. If your unit is version 12, that dates it to 2014, and the installer should have updated it.

Wow, that is an old version of the software! Fortunately in my experience it is pretty easy to do the software update if you follow the instructions on the Raymarine website.
I have never lost any data or settings (so far!), but for safety You should save all the waypoints and all the settings using the Data menu (again all in the manual but frankly hardly need the manual as very simple). BUT make sure you don't overwrite your chart card by accidentally saving to the wrong SD, best to take the chart card out and keep out till after done all the saving and updating.
