I'm contemplating updating to one of these but at over £2.6k in the UK, I'm tempted to import one which would, after import tax and VAT work out to about £1.9/.2.0k .

I'm OK with the risks of importing but the rub is that to get this sort of price I would have to buy up to five of them!

So the question is do forumites reckon there would be a sufficient demand to pass on these savings at the same price as I would pay?

I've posted this before, so you may already be aware of this option. You can buy refurbished E120 direct from Raymarine for £1,761.03 inc VAT. 'Refurbished' usually means ex-demo, and they come with 6 months guarantee

Tel Raymarine Service Department 02392 693611 ext 2029

Wow, that's good- although I am normally wary about refurbished electronics goods and a 6 months factory guarantee as opposed to a full 12 months from the same source must say something about the manufacturer's view on reliability, don't you think?

Early days yet, I suppose, on the other hand I imagine the manufacturer can't sell a full warranty product at substantially less than their RRP as this would undermine their retail position/profit.

Definitely food for thought and I'm obliged to you for opening my eyes to this alternative

Gosh, I thought that just about solves it but your link gave me a US $ price. So one would have to add 25% import duty and another 17.5% VAT, as far as I am aware

not sure what the import duty is, but at that price, I will be buying one and fitting it before we leave the US for sure. Perhaps I should 'fit' 2 and flog one when we get over this side... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep- seems you are well placed to take legitimate advantage of the US price.
Presumably as you will be importing a yacht/boat too, the fittings will not be separately assessed for VAT and import duty although the boat will- Isn't there also an issue over RCD compliance to import a vessel from outside the EU?
Unless of course the vessel is EU built and VAT paid and just undertaking a return journey
