My boat has all raymarine instruments including a 'black and white' chartplotter. I am going to upgrade to a colour plotter and had been favouring the standard horizon CP180 which has been well reviewed. I noticed in last months PBO that the raychart 435 is very similar in price and 6" screen rather than 5". What's the general opinion of the two units. Also is there any likelihood of being able to 'trade in' my existing plotter?

Raymarine plotters are good, we have used an E80 and really like it. The new A series looks sweet too.

I believe Raymarine are offering a trade in allowance on their new plotters but it's only on C and E series as far as I know. A quick google will tell you what's around at the moment.

I have a Raymarine A 65, and have no complaints. The bigger the screen, the better, but also the more expensive, but it also depends on the available space. Does anyone know what, if any, is the difference between the Raymarine A65, and the A60 ?

[/ QUOTE ]Screen definition and size - the A65 has a 6.5" screen with 640x480 pixels; the A60 has a 5.7" screen and only 320x240 pixels.

I have had a Raymarine 435 for four years now, and it is OK. Not brilliant, but OK. It takes Navionics Gold cartridges on a compact flash card, whereas the CP180 takes C-Map. I think it is a lower resolution screen than the CP-180, but I find the 435 is prefectly adequate. The screen redraw times are slower than a more modern plotter such as a C or E series. It doesn't connect to SeaTalk directly, but has NMEA183 connectivity.

My main disappointment with it is that I cannot get it to read waypoints created in either the Navionics PC package or RayChart. This is a real nuisance, as I wanted to plot routes on the laptop and then upload to the plotter. It is also limited in the number of waypoints it can hold - you have to archive them as routes to get to the 500 quoted.

I am thinking of changing to a system which is radar capable, and even though the rest of the instruments are Raymarine, I would buy Garmin!

if not, there is a healthy demand for these on ebay. I sold my 7 year old old Garmin, which wasnt even compatible with the new bluechart system for £180 a little while ago. Im sure you could do better than that. and by avoiding the "trade in" scenario it leaves you free to buy your new one at the best online price, which I would imagine much cheaper than from someone taking part exchange units.

Raymarine are doing a cashback on Chartplotters at the moment. Details available from their website.

It worked for me, except I haven't had my original receipt back yet.
