Searched old threads (5pgs) - saw nothing on Point
Inherited a C80 chartplotter want to add Radar but RM has discontinued the
compatible Radar unit - RD218.
Curious if others have faced similar situation & what your solution you came up
with.
Saw one thread which mentioned an interface box (NEMA/SeaTalk/etc) but don't know if that would help given the software used in chartplotter.

Curious that RM would discontinue a Radar unit when CP is only 3 yrs old:confused:

Not Yet

robertj: RM rep at Boat Show told me C80 no longer had a compatible Radar as the (RD218) was discontinued. Vendors have confirmed - one even called RM.
But their website still shows it - but the C80 is not shown as related product with either radome.

I bought a new RD218 for my C80 at the beginning of the season. It had to be ordered directly from Raymarine by a dealer.

The analogue radomes have disappeared off the raymarine website but you might be lucky with a direct enquiry.

There are a few second hand radomes about as people upgrade to digital radar.

Otherwise sell the C80 and buy the Garmin multifunction plotter and Radar.. a lot cheaper solution and a Hi Res Radar to boot!

Cheers

A few retailers are still listing the RD218, although there's no online stock availability info. The 24" RD424 works with the C80, and it's listed by JG Tech, whose website is usually up to date.

Mixed Msgs

Thanks for the new responses & info/suggestions.

Bd - The fact that RM discontinued a compatible product for a 3 yr old CP and the wild goose chase has certainly caused me to look at other mfgs. Plus many users do not hold RM in such high esteem anyway which I'm beginning to understand.
If I have to swap out my CP You can believe I will probably choose to leave RM.

pvb - Thanks for info & Link - I'll check with them - Interesting that RM tech told me there were NO alternatives.

One UK vendor who supposedly had a supply of RD218s - told me there might be one left out of country but the price & shipping did not seem reasonable

Msg Back

pvb - here's response from JGT
"Obsolete and all sold out u need a new plotter now look at lowrance and simrad much better units"

Which is becoming a chorus from all vendors + many websites including RM are not up to date

A while back another Vendor in Scotland told me that another concern should be that if I started having problem with either the C80 "classic" (don't ya luv when a company adds that tag = obsolete) or the matching analog radar that
parts & fixing it might be an issue too......... of course, he was also tying to
sell new gear but that is a point

Thanks again

Spoke to RM - Closing the loop

Contacting RM usa was neither easy or quick but the RM gentleman that I spoke with was clear & direct. Here are key pieces of an e-mail he offered with details:

Only analog radar units will function with the C-Series Classic MFD's. Raymarine has discontinued the sale of analog radar units.

Model numbers M92650-S or E52065 are 2KW 18" domes that are compatible.

Model numbers M92652-S or E52067 are 4KW 24" domes that are compatible.

Model number T52001-S is a 4KW open array that is compatible.

Model number T52012-S is a 10KW open array that is compatible

If the Radar unit was made prior to May of 2003 , then it is not compatible. If if was made after May of 2003 then it is compatible. Please see the following link for answer ID# 964 pertaining to radar compatibility.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pls Note - I'll convert the model #s:
E52065 = RD218 which replaced the M92650-S (Pathfinder 2kw)
E52067 = RD424 which replaced the M92652-S (Pathfinder 4kw)

No refurbished are available either - He directed me to internet for search.

OOuch

s14b - My condolences on your "loss" - has to be very frustrating.
No hope is reviving the Radar?

If I see or hear of any, I'll pass along as I'm going to take a few deep breaths
before making my decision on how to proceed.

Maybe we should start a support group for orphaned Chartplotters looking for a Radar sibling;)

The radar recently gave up the ghost on my 2005 C120/Radar combo, for the reasons you have identified I am now waiting in the hope of finding a second hand unit as I can't justify replacing the plotter and the radar at the moment.

Could it be the magnetron? I understand that it is the component more likely to fail which could be replaced.

I have just been down this route and managed to source a used M92652-S 24" 4kw radome from ebay. I have been looking for an RD218 for a long while and they very rarely come up for sale and when they do they sell for silly money.

There was a M92650-S 18" 2kw jobbie on ebay last week. It sold for £400, which was reasonable.

This one would work but is too much money I think.

Occasionally you do get new RD218's being cleared on ebay like this one.
