My C80 plotter has just stopped working. (It picked its moment, of course, the first time we have been in fog for 2 years!) The "welcome" screen ("Raymarine Multifunction Navigation Display" is displayed for about 11 seconds and the screen then goes black for about 1 second before repeating the sequence. I have tried using 2 separate power supplies but with the same result. Doesn't look like a DIY job to me but any advice very welcome.
I am currently off the Turkish coast near Kusadasi. The nearest service centre appears to be Lakki marina, Leros, Greece. Does anyone know if it still exists? Or if there is anywhere nearer?

Might be that time of the year :(. My E80 did something very similar last Saturday. Would come on OK, but at 5 minute intervals would flick off then come back on. If I had made any changes to the settings in those 5 mins, they would also reset to factory settings. Also most of the routes were lost (luckily I have them backed up on a card), and the follow route function did not work.
A factory reset sorted it out.
Seems strange, what causes this in the first place, and how a factory reset can fix it.

Raymarines stuff runs an embedded version of Windows ...... need we say more! :)

Well ok then ...... The usual accumulation of dead tracks, waypoints , fragmented memory and storage space and possibly untested combinations of settings gets too much for the operating system and hey presto you are in trouble.

The factory reset clears a lot of things to zero, sometimes you need to reset things like AIS alarms and range rings etc but it has 'fixed' a few machines that I have seen like this before.

BTW if you do a software upgrade of an MFD don't forget to do a reset after doing the load and reboot.

Just for info. Sod's Law reigns supreme - I had ordered (but not yet received) a data card so that I could back up my 1000+ waypoints etc. Lost all those but worth it to have the gadget working again.

C80 coincidences...

My C80 started playing up on Saturday too. Switched it on and off several times, reseated the CF card and all was fine. I hadn't realised I had done a hard reset though, but that explains why all my settings had disappeared!

Curiously, my symptoms were that the welcome screen was fine, but when the operating screen came it appeared to be suffering from interference of some sort, just like a TV does when it loses its signal. I cannot imagine what caused it to do that, and am very glad it's back up and working.

I've seen this before, mostly on C70 models. Be prepared for terminal failure. The stripes on the display can be a sign of the LCD controller on it's way out. It may also be a sign of a poor connection between the display and the main board. For you I hope the latter. I've had two C70's with a 50% success in repair.

Cheers,
Arno

One week ago I encountered two faults:
1. The C70 display went fuzzy with vertical lines on the display. Light tap to the display fixed it.
2. The boot up sequence would continously recycle as per the OP's issue.
Factory reset fixed it.

The factory reset caused a few issues. Firstly NMEA has to be reconfigured for 38400 for the AIS. The chart vectors/layers have to be turned back on etc but the one thing that did catch me out was chart depths. It took me a while to realise the depths were now displayed in feet instead of meters. I had a lot less water under me than I expected!

As the chart plotter is now unreliable. May last a month, a year etc I've been considering alternatives. The deciding factor though is not chart plotter alone but chart plotter/radar combination as one dictates the other. I can't just replace the C70 I have to replace the radar to.

Giiven how complicated changing my radar/C120 combo proved to be (in my case the it was the radar that needed replacing) I would seriously consider trying to source a replacement second hand unit instead.

That said the new plotter is a wonderful new toy.

Just bought our RL70C back from Turkey after Raymarine Turkey couldn't fix it - a new CPU board was needed.

Raymarine UK fixed it in 4 days with a complete software erasure and re-install which only they can do here. Costs about £90 instead of £600 for a new CPU.

Check its not been put on night view setting by accident

Check its not been put on night view setting by accident

This is a useful tip of what to check for but it sounds like that wasn't the OP's problem.

I had trouble with night view on my C80 widescreen. It wasn't obvious to me at first why I couldn't see it in bright daylight, as I was thinking 'fault' and somehow night view didn't occur to me. When I worked it out, the next problem was remembering which combination of menu soft keys to press to get it back on to daylight view when I couldn't see the choices because it was on night view!

So my tip. If you think it might be on night view and you don't want to wait until night to see the softkey menu choices, put something over your head and the plotter to create 'artificial darkness' like an old-time photographer. Bingo, instant darkness and you can see the choices to set it on daylight again. High tech, eh?
