Yestersday when out sailing the screen on our plotter went 'fuzzy', like a TV with a bad signal. Data appeared ok, but eventually the screen got so bad i turned it off. I turned on again 30min later and it was OK. On the return trip today it was fine.
Does anyone know what the problem may have been? Is it just an unexplained glitch or is the plotter on the way out?

John, I had a simular problem and it truned out to be bad connections of the screen connector. Just simply pushing the connection "home" solved it.

Turned mine on today and had exactly the same problem: turned off and on again, no different.

Took out chart cartridge and put back in, no different.

Turned off and on again, worked OK. I'll try the connector at the back if it returns. It has never done this before, and it's at a dry chart table (with a dehumidifier running below all winter).
 
As networks said it is a bad connection on the screen ribbon plug. You may have to remove the plotter front fascia to get at the screen connector.

Thanks for this: The fault has recurred, and seemed permanent, so I had a look inside, breaking the "warranty void" seal (well out of warranty anyway). I had to quite substantially dismantle the plotter, removing two circuit boards, to get at the screen connector, but on reassembly it seems to work properly again. How long this will last I don't know.

The micro ribbon connectors joining the circuit boards are tiny and seem very fragile. PC connectors are huge in comparison.

Hi John,
I have seen this problem many times as a raymarine tech and know where the problem lies
I have managed to source the same ribbon connectors and also can fix/secure the LCD jockey pcb that comes loose, this is what causes the screen to become intermittent

I had this problem too, and I have just fixed it (after a bit of trial and error.

1 Pull off the main cover. Fingernails round the edges and of it comes!

2 Remove the chart plotter from it's housing and take all the connections off the back. Make a note of the the Seatalk connections as it is possible to put them back on the wrong terminals.

3 Take out all the screws (about 15) that hold the black plate. One is under the "warranty void" sticker and another is under another sticker.

4 Ease the clips around the edges to lift the black plate off.

5 Lift off the glass cover in front of the screen before it falls off.

6 DON'T remove the screen. You have to work from the other side.

7 Check the little circuit board that has the connector onto the screen. It will probably be displaced. Manoeuvre it until it is properly seated and clicked into place.

8 If necessary you can take off the other circuit boards to get better access. There is one metal spacer with a screw in. Otherwise you just have to spring back the plastic clips.

9 Now put it all back together.

It took me over half an hour the first time because I didn't know what I was working with. I could do it in ten minutes now. Raymarine would charge you over £100 if you send it back to them.
