Just connect my digital yacht AIS receiver to my C120W chart plotter and no signal. Wiring and settings on C120W all amended as per instructions and peer checked by a mate. But no AIS signal. Any clues?.

i'm not a techie, but have you adjusted the baud rate?

I think the rate for AIS is much higher than NMEA, there is a setting in the drop down menu to change the rate to 38400 or something along those lines.

I updated the system software in my C70, lost the AIS signal, but all worked fine when I adjusted the baud rate.

You can use the Diagnostic Menu to look at data coming in on the various input ports. I have an E120W and here is the selection path:
Menu --> System Diagnostics --> External Interfaces --> NMEA Port 2. Then use "Buffer" soft key (2nd from left) to display the incoming data.
If data is there and the port has the correct baud rate selected you should see data sentences from the AIS scrolling through - something like !AIVDM .......... being Rx and every few seconds a Tx acknowledge/message back to the AIS.

If you can see data coming in you need to be sure the display layer is enabled as others have already pointed out. If no data present you need to check wiring is correct (NMEA + and NMEA - may be transposed) or otherwise check the AIS device output on a PC.
