Raymarine \'C\' Series

Looking for some advice as regards 'Navionics Gold Vector charts', we are looking to replace our B+W GPS plotter (Simrad CP32 ) which uses 'C' Map's, with one of the new Raymarine C80 Multi function displays With GPS + Radar.

The 'C' series uses 'Navionics Gold Vector charts' which I have not used before, are they as good as 'C' Maps, any advice from the experts??.

P.S anyone want to buy a Simrad CP32 with Instructions and one Card !

Thanks

Re: Raymarine \'C\' Series

MUCH better to have separate radar and plotter. Stick to your C-Map - if you have to replace the plotter then you could do a lot worse than purchase of a Navman 5600 from http://www.boatus-store.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=20002&langId=-1&catalogId=20002&productId=96283&catalogId=20002&classNum=10803&subdeptNum=48&storeNum=3 You will need to log-in before you finish the check out, and the log-in asks for a state - I used armed forces europe and it accepted this. It then quoted less than $900 including shipping for the Navman 5600!
Alternatively I could purchase some of your old no longer required C-Map cartridges /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Raymarine \'C\' Series

We only have a small space to fit one unit and the 'C80' will just fit, might try the States for a price on it as the stong pound makes buying from the USA a Bargain.

Will sell l the old Plotter with the cartridge as a complete system.

thanks

I'd stick with C-Map too - nothing personal against Navionics, but C-Map are better known and you'll likely find more places you can buy charts from.

Not sure why Raytheon went for Navionics with these new units - they look really nice, but that kinda put me off.

So what do you fly? 737's? The only aircraft I can think of with flap 40.

Andy,

I am also looking to install a C80 combo when Raymarine start shipping. I have been told that Raymarine are moving away from Cmap to Navionics - all the latest additions to the range have used Navionic. So I think if you want Raymarine you may not have a choice.

Re: Raymarine \'C\' Series

At the Southampton boatshow I bought what I thought was the latest all singing and dancing Pathfinder+ plotter and was told how good the C-Map charts were by someone on the Raymarine stand. Now I find out that they are using Navionics on their new units and I feel as if I have been conned.

I started doing some investigating and it would appear that the switch is not for technical reasons but for commercial reasons. Most people I spoke to only had good things to say about C-Map and it would appear that in the more popular sailing areas C-Map and Navionics are on a par but in more exotic/remote areas C-Map have better coverage. Navionics are a bit cheaper but C-Map update more often and are used on a lot of big ships - which must be good.

Although I have not had a chance to really use my plotter yet, I looked at the charts on C-Map's PC planning software and they look very good, so I feel a bit better about things now.

Has anyone else found themselves in my situation ?

Re: Raymarine \'C\' Series

We have deceided to go with the new 'C' series with Navionics, I had a good chat with our RYA instructor and he rates the Navionics charts. We will only need 1 XL chart to cover all our cruising area including the East coast of Ireland.
With the small space available on our 39 Endurance the 'C80' will give us the best viewable area 8.4''. the only other unit that will fit is only 6.5''.

We hope to have it fitted before we bring our boat back from Jersey in April
