The ST5000 (I have one and think it's now obsolete model) control is the autopilot, it doesn't drive a separate computer like some and is used with fluxgate and rudder position sensor and type 1 & 2 linear drives, which may have different length of travel to the 4000 drive. Raymarine give good technical help, suggest you phone them for advice.

The "upgrade" for an ST 4000 is an SPX5 which uses the same drive but a separate course computer which can be more tailored to the boat's characteristics. Not worth it if the current one works. The weakness in the system is the drive, not the control, so if spending more money an inboard pilot is better.

Can an ST5000 autopilot control replace the ST4000 control. If yes does it improve the performace? Thanks

I had to buy an ST4000 in an emergency to get us on our way from Sicily when the Raymarine Agent did not turn up after a week after our 6000 died.
At that time, 2005, the ST4000 and ST5000 were identical units other than the number printed on them but sold with different drives, the 4000 having the drive that bolts to the wheel in our case.
The fact that they were the same unit came to light after me having a sensible disussion with the workshop at Raymarine after the technical help people told me to just go to Gibraltar to get it repaired which was just daft!

On that model of 4000 you could go into the menu and somewhere in there is a sub menu that switches into 5000 mode. ie: it can control all types of drives. I cannot remember what the current output is of the control head is but it was not enough for my purposes as I wanted to drive a Type 2 linear drive and so built I a 60 Amp mosfet switching power supply and used the linear drive setting on the 4000 control head in 5000 mode to control the mosfet circuit.

So if they are still the same unit I would guess that the performance is exactly the same.
