I was getting intermittent “AIS lost connection” alarms. At startup the system would be fine but it would progressively deteriorate. Switching off/on and all would be well for a while.
Last weekend sailing from Eastbourne to Gosport the whole network started loosing instruments but a reboot fixed it.
This weekend the MFD turned on but all the instruments were dead.
Power for the Seatalk NG network is provided by the autopilot ACU. Inside next to the Seatalk NG plug was a blown 3A fuse. Several fuses later and a bit of head scratching identified a corroded network terminator. It was hard to extract it out of the 5 way connector and when it did come out it took a pin with it.
Replacing the fuse, the terminal block and the network terminator resolved all of the issues.
I identified another problem. The instruments all have 2 network terminals so you can daisy chain them. One of the units had a blanking plug in one connector and a drop cable in the other. Pulling out the blanking plug revealed corrosion behind. Most of the pins came away with the blanking plug. The unit was still serviceable.
