I have two RL80Cs, one a master with C-Map sockets on the lower helm and one without the sockets on the upper helm.

I just took the boat out for a spin after no use since October last year and found the upper RL80 did not display any charts, only a radar screen which says something like 'scanner disconnected'. It worked perfectly well last season.

The owners manual suggests checking the cables which I did on the upper helm and will try to get to the lower connections this week, but only the upper helm was not protected by the severe temperatures during the winter and no work was done to the lower helm.

I did a master reset on both plotters but no difference.

What makes the master a master and slave a slave? I could not see any config on the menus.

Any ideas about the problem?

Thanks

Richard

Somewhere buried in the System setup menu is set to Master or Slave - if memory serves.....
If not there, then in the radar or plotter setup.
Or may be, read the manual first?

Master/slave is set via the set up menu but from your symptoms I'd be 99pc certain you have a bad coonection in the hsb2 cable that links the two units

This cable carries all the video data from master to slave, including the radar info and chart chip image. So check connections etc very well

Btw I have 3 e120s for sale if you want to upgrade. One season old, mint, boxed. I just swapped them for e140ws which is why they're for sale. Just got them back to uk last week so was about to place an ad

Asking 50pc of best mainstream internet price so that makes them £1300 each, delivered in uk. Includes all cables and manuals and cd, just as with a new e120. I'll place a for sale ad here soon when I get time

I must look again at the system menu as I could not see this for love nor money on RL80s. This made me think that the units are hard wired since the upper helm has no sockets for nav cards.

I will get into the lower helm to check these cables and hsb2 especially. Upper was fine but you can guess getting into the lower is just a PITA.

To the wag who suggested looking at the manual - yes I have looked and looked. Without the manual it is not possible to guess the reset method for starters!!!

Regarding the E120s this does sound a tempting proposition but I am sure I would need to change the radar and GPS at least. Autopilot needs thinking about. I was also looking at the very nice wide screen units at Excel. Early adopter though..........Hmm maybe the 120s will do the trick.

Are there any free lance Raymarine people on the Hamble? Maricom are pretty tied up.

Turn both plotters off and put the upper HSB plug into a glass of coke, after 20 mins throw coke away and repeat with a second glass.

dunk in fresh water, shake and leave to dry before plugging back in.

Coke is a mild acid that will clean the contacts from the winters damp oxidation , the bubbles speed the clean.

Hope it works :)

There is an hsb plug at both ends but the upper is easy to get to and more vulnerable.

I can't remeber where in the menu it is, sorry. Hope you find it

E120 will work with the same radar, autopilot and GPS as RL80s. It connects to Seatalk 1 and NMEA083 perfectly well (and NMEA2000/STNG if you want). I've early-adopted the E wides and they are fab, but £4,500 each so quite a bit more than my 1-season old E120s!
