Hi All,

I wonder if someone clever can answer this one for me. My boat has a Raymarine 7001+ autopilot in the cabin and a linked 6001+ up on the flybridge..
This week whilst on a course it suddenly decided to want to do a 180degree turn and the bearing it was showing was completely wrong..

I think when I turned the system off and on again it reset to a different bearing but it is still way off from the true heading (and it was accurate up until this week)

Can anyone suggest any pointers for investigation? I'm new to this bit of equipment (and the boat for that matter)

Many thanks in advance,

Nick

Now the multi-million dollar question.. Where on earth do people hide their fluxgates? I've checked behind the scenes on the flybridge, the helm surround panels, and just about every locker known to mankind. I've found the Autohelm computer and it has fluxgate wiring leaving it but strewth these things are hidden.

Best bet is to follow the wiring, not always easy, i know. It's anybodies guess where it will be.

Would be worth digging the handbook out for the autopilot and running through the commissioning process, there are times when the whole thing just needs resetting for some inexplicable reason.

Ha! I wondered whether that might be your next question! They're usually fitted in the middle area of the boat, often in the back of a locker.

Reactions: vas
theory has it that fluxgate compass must be fairly low close to the COG of the boat...
now where it's stuffed, is another thing.
Probably would be easier to check around for something that you placed in a new spot, toolbox, fire extinguisher, whatever!

Maybe wander around the boat with a sea searcher while someone watches the autopilot compass...

I found mine well hidden in the top of a saloon underseat locker. There is supposed to be a big yellow warning sticker on the outside: Buy RAYMARINE FLUXGATE COMPASS FOR AUTOPILOTS AND INSTRUMENTS M81190 in North Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, for C $140.00. Maybe behind/under cushions?

When I bought the boat I thought I had identified it bolted to a midships bulkhead, but that was the remote control base station: Raymarine Autopilot - S100 Base Station Pod Base - E15024 - FREE P&P 723193150245 | eBay

Thanks a lot for that.. I managed to 'finally' find the pesky fluxgate. It was on a makeshift wooden board just in front of the black water holding tank.. (Such a nice place to hang out). It doesn't look like anything electrical or metal are nearby. I may have to do some ohm testing on the wires I guess?

Or you could read post #5

Thanks mate.. I missed that somewhere along the line. The wiring all seems ok but I'll go through the initial calibration process again and see how that works..

(y)I've had a few cases over the years where it's all gone to pot and a full reset and re-calibration has cured everything, so fingers crossed.
