Hi there dear fellows. My boat is based in Mallorca, and after passing my VHF radio test (which was highly recommended by you guys) I have been trying to use/test my VHF to no avail. I have a portable which works. I have looked at the inboat handset and realise there is no MMSI, so can I assume without a MMSI the VHF wont receive or transmit?
If this is the case where do I go to get the systems MMSI. This is on a T44 GT 2008. Many thanks for your guidance...Nick
 
Stupid question - have you checked the aerial is connected properly?

Without an MMSI the VHF should still work but you won't be able to use the DSC features. At least this is how it was when I bought my Icom last year.
 
As above, the VHF should transmit and receive as if it were just a normal VHF radio if it has no mmsi number programmed into it. So the lack of mmsi is not causing your problem. You probably have an issue in the wiring between the VHF unit and the aerial.

You can obtain an mmsi number by following the details on this link

It's free,and you get an mmsi number straightaway

yes its all connected.....I did test the VHF with another local boat and it all works....It seems that Port Portals just didnt want to talk to me

yes, I've now done this and have a MMSI number which is now programmed into the set - thank you

Good job sorting it - just for clarity the "stupid question" comment was aimed at my question - not yours! Sometimes checking the most obvious things is overlooked! I've had a VHF with very poor performance which turned out to be a loose coax connection at the aerial. It worked well enough that VTS answered my radio check as we were leaving the marina, because they are only 500 metres away, but once I was a couple of miles offshore it got very quiet and nobody could hear me!

I have a dual station 240E on my boat, the speaker is an "active speaker", not just a speaker and one of mine failed, I couldn't find anyone to repair it, or find a secondhand one (that worked) so ended up replacing it with another radio.

I have been searching unsuccessfully for the actual transmitter which I guess is buried somewhere behind a panel. I only have visible the handset and the speaker....took a vid of the back compartment and have been unable to find anything that resembles a box with an aerial cable plugged in.....they do hide things away on boats!!!
 
thank you...I found it buried in the aft Cabin behind a hidden panel....however, you were completely right....the cable connecting the aerial had come apart....quick fix and radio check completed....at least is a little job that has a cheap positive conclusion....thanks for your help all

Ok, it’s for a friend, I’ll help him check the manuals which he has apparently but couldn’t make much sense of it so I’ll see if I can help. Thanks Nick.
 
form memory, it was pretty easy, even for me.....I think you go into settings and find DSC sub menu, then click that. you will then find another submenu that says my MMSI...this is where you put in your MMSI....hope that helps

Remember that you can probably only enter the MMSI once so make sure you get it right on the first go. Some radios allow one change from the initial MMSI, if they are sold on after that you will need to get the manufacturer to reset it so it will accept a new MMSI.

Well that changes things, seems a little inconvenient, I gather he’s only looking at because has just had Ofcom documents back to set it up??
