I am having trouble getting a water tight "seal" on the raw water strainer. It looks like its a Maestrani or Osculti strainer with a perspex clear top of around 4" and a large O ring around 42 in diameter. Does or has anyone purchased said items and if so where from? I'm getting to the point of replacing the whole thing tbh but the costs of a new one is around £180+ !!! If anyone has replaced said item can you tell me what you replaced it with, suitable for a Yanmar 4JH-TE . Thanks.

I've made large o rings using closed cell foam neoprene cord bought from ebay, glue the ends together with superglue.

The top ring may have warped as it is only supported by 2 bolts 180 degree apart, with unbolted sections warping upwards, especially if clamped tightly. I would remove the top and inspect it for flatness, say by placing on a piece of glass or flat surface. If warped try filing flat or lapping on the glass or even have a machine shop skim the surface with a mill (but I think that would be an awkward job). Similarly with the body, test and inspect for dings and mashes and flatness.

I have found thick cork sheet makes good gaskets for low pressure seals on shitty surfaces, having good firmness but sufficient ability to compress as required. Also, loads of rubber materials that could allow you to make an oversized gasket as well.

As BoB says, the top ring is probably/possibly no longer flat, possibly by overtightening. You could turn it upside down, and tighten gently onto a flat rubber joint. There's very little pressure involved, so it shouldn't take much to make a watertight joint.

Hi Caldadh
Commercial ships all carry an o ring maker set.
They contain a variety of diameter o ring stock. A jig to hold as you cut and a jig as you superglue it together.
The resulting o rings are as good as bought units under hash conditions with a variety of liquids and gases.
If the first try doesn't work the second will.Gary
