This might be a silly question but I have learnt to ask before things get messy...

I need to remove and replace the raw water pump on my generator, its not belt driven but has a shaft directly into the timing. It looks like I just undo four bolt and pull the whole thing off. However, do I need to drain down the oil first? I have experience of not draining things and then spending more time cleaning up than the actual repair!

Great, thank you.

Nezt question if I may. Pump is removed and there is a cog on the shaft any advice on how I can remove it and get it onto the new pump shaft? Brute force and ignorance or take it to a machine shop?

Edit: Just worked out there is such a thing called a gear puller. Will go and hunt one down.

If there is no grub screw or similar on the cog, it will be pressed on. Removing and installing it on the new pump might well be much trickier than you are expecting and you might well need a heat source and access to a freezer. Taking it to a local machine shop might well be the safer option if you have no experience in press fit components.

What engine does you generator have. It will help with giving specific advice.

My generator has a farymann engine that is driven in the similar to the way you describe.

Its a Northern Lights genny, and couldnt find a gear puller small enough so I ended up taking the old pump to a local garage to get it pulled off.

The gear is held in place with a nut and locking washer so I just transfered the gear to the new shaft, tightened the nut, reinstalled and everything appears to be working fine for the moment.

The garage said they used a couple of small pry bars to get it off so will get a couple of those instead of an actual puller.
