Has anybody got a recommendation for what sort of material to use to make a gasket for the opening "lid" of a small intake strainer?

I made one last season from inner tube rubber and this survived many openings and re-sealings - I generally check the strainer daily when I've been motoring. The rubber worked OK but is rather flimsy, fiddly and being compressible makes it difficult to know how hard to tighten the top.

Has anybody come up with a good solution for this?
Grateful for any suggestions.

used the same idea with mine but used 3 layers of inner tube rubber. no problems after 4 years. i'd stick with it

Another idea is to use polyeuthane mastic to put a generous bead of mastic on one face. Leave it unassembled for 24 hours so the mastic cures fully, then assemble in the normal way. The mastic will act just like rubber but sticks to one surface so easy to open and inspect.

Lion Blue is the sort of thing you want from here http://www.jameswalker.biz/group/categories/compressed_fibre_jointings.html unfortunately comes in at least 1mx1.5m sheets. That's James Walker who also make Treadmaster.

You might find something in smaller sheets at a car spares shop. Try any small engineering works. Anywhere that makes their own gaskets should be able to let you have a few scraps,

Another brand is Klingerite. I found some thin stuff in 10" squaresheets but too thin I think.

Maybe if you hunt around for those two names you'll find something.

If all else fails thin card eg ceral packet well impregnated with grease to make it water proof.
