My Perkins lumps are as old as the boat, 36yrs, but will be completely rebuilt so that is not the issue. My question is with cast iron engines what are the pro's and cons' of removing the corroded alloy heat exchangers and cooling with raw water?

I have no Brass, bronze or alloy, other than the present exchangers. I have Heat exchangers already present for the gearbox and engine oil and these are both raw cooled so why not the engines too? I am not worried about the calorifior as that is heated by a 7kva generator, through heat exchange and/or electricity.

My 4-99 ----- presently being replaced was HEat exchanger cooled .... seawater to coils and then fresh to the engine. What a pain - it leaked, had to be plastic-metalled every so often ... expensive to replace .......
The replacement engine is a 4-107 and its completely raw cooled ...... on discussion with the engineer - who knows of my sad exchanger !! We both agreed that raw is not the kindest way to cool an engine ..... but for me its an answer to my prayers !!

Let's be honest many boats have been and still are raw cooled .... STILL chugging away happily .....

Many thanks, that was my outlook too. My present exchangers are about 10% chemical metal on investigation.
