Just finished intermediate service on hard-standing.
2001 boat, 500 hours.
Warming up engines at 1000RPM to replace oil and oil filter.
Noticed there was a lot of 'clattering' from the top of the leg.
Noticed the top of the leg was warm going on hot!
Surely this is bad as noise and heat = friction....
Oil was the right colour, no bits on the drain plug magnet...
Nothing to do with exhaust heat. That was the right temp.
Engines are in Neutral

What's causing this clattering, is it usual? and how do I stop it?

Thanks in advance!

Legs do get warm, but you don't often lean over the back to check at 24kts, and seawater cools the lower sections.

Clattering noise not good.
Does the noise go away if you put it in gear?
Could be a problem with the UJ or upper bearings.

You can check if it's the UJ by starting the engine and keep in neutral, Turn wheel form lock to lock. If the noise is worse while at full lock that at mid-ships, the UJ needs servicing.

Leg was trimmed down I assume. If the leg was right up the uj will be binding (been there....done that!!!)

Thanks for the advice guys. Due to ram problems, I didn't get to start the engines again before I put it back in the oggin....
I did the warming up at +6, no higher, so it shouldn't have rattled due to position.
Legs were straight ahead.
It's on both drives rather than just one, so failure of a single part is unlikely I would have thought.
I'll try in neutral from side to side and see whether I can hear a difference and report back.
