Just got my IRC rating through of .973 for a Bavaria 40 Ocean.

How does that compare with other boats?

Who else will be in IRC 2 with me and a black flag (dosn't that me we can't have a false start?)

Seems pretty generous to me. I have a 33 footer with an IRC rating of mare than 1 (about 1.03 from memory). This means that if we both complete the course in (say) 9 hours, you would beat me on corrected by more that half an hour!

Who do I complain to about this? :)

And I almost certainly need my half hour. :)

If your out there my boat is Highland Profiteer GBR 7951T

P.S. Do we need dodgers with our sail numbers?

Yes - you do need dodgers with the number (officially at least).

To get some idea of how your rating compares try going to the RORC site (www.rorc.org) and looking at the IRC results for the races this year. That gives both boat type and TCF

I think you're being a little disingenuous there Dave. If you have a 33' er with an IRC TCF > 1 then it must be a pretty extreme racing machine

It might be, but I'm certainly not :)

Actually, it's classed as a Cruiser/racer but I only Cruise mine (with the one exception of the Round Island Race). What I have a wry smile about is that the guys who are serious about racing their equivalent boats manage to get a sub 1 rating for their boats from the IRC despite them being much better equipped.

Just checked - you're actually mixing the two different handicap systems. People who race regularly have an IRC handicap, those who only do the RTIR have an ISC handicap issued just for the event.

They are not directly comparable. For example last year I entered the ISC handicap and got a rating of 0.921. This year I am entering the IRC class with a TCF of 0.852.

You're right that the two rating systems are different and can be confused, however as it happens I did have an IRC rating two years ago and it's exactly the same as the ISC rating I've been given for my last couple of entries. No big deal - I'm doing the race for the fun of it. Oh and to try and win that big bowl thing as well !

How strange - I thought from my experience with Bedouin that ISC was systematically higher than IRC, but looking at the current RORC fleet the X332s all seem to have TCFs close to 1.000 - same as your ISC TCF.

The rating system seems shrouded in mystery - I guess deliberately so.

What type of boat is Bedouin and what group are you in? I’ll keep a look out.
