OK. So far we've been lucky and not had a rat come visiting. However, other folks have and we are wondering about rat guards for when we have long lines ashore. Force 4 do one but it's for 10mm line or more: we use 8mm ex climbing rope for our long lines. Does anyone have any experience of rat guards? Anyone like to make a recommendation?

Never had a rat. Did find a squirrel on board once, that frightened the bejasus out of me when I opened the cockpit cover, but that was on the mooring, 100 yards from the shore.

I wonder if a couple of feet of a suitable diameter of copper pipe, free to rotate on the lines, would work to discourage rodents.

In Venezuela every boat in the marina cut a hole in the bottom of water bottle and fed the rope through it. The theory is a rat try to go over it it spins and the rat falls off. There were rats around and the marina had lots of cats to kill them, I never heard of a rat on a boat. We did have an Iguana walk up the passarelle when we were on board.
