Raspberry Pie for Dummies

I'm reading this thread with great interest... I had an idea to replace my vintage and failing plotter (mounted above the companionway) with a pi running openplotter.

This would just be a fun project to replace something I no longer use, it would not be my primary plotter (I use a handheld garmin, with my phone and a tablet as backups).

I've done some basic searching for components and the screen is the most difficult. Has anyone sourced a touchsreen 7in display IP 65 for use with a pi?
 
I expect to collect them today . I bought two with the intention of making an information centre/alarm for the boat, and a weather station for home.

They are the ABOX ones with a starter kit.

Fear not, I will be back with the occasional question !

If its for boaty stuff, have you considered a Moitessier HAT? Moitessier HAT 2

I haven't a scooby how it works (I wish I knew how to do codes, etc, but it all sound like a load of piffle) but it does seen to have some good functionality for use aboard a smaller yacht.

As GHA says, the OPenplotter was not ready for the Pi4. With the Pi3 it works well . I think once you have your head around the terminology it is fairly plug and play.

I upgraded to Pi4 recently and went straight for the Raspbian setup and installed OPenCPN without Openplotter so that I could also use email and other office software plus media player.

Downside of Pi4: uses micro HDMI ports, needs constant 3A supply through USB C lead, a different case. And I was surprised that the screen adjust when scrolling across charts is no faster. Hmmm

Sorry for thread drift. Go for it Sarabande, it's fun; plus you have an emergency backup for your chartplotter (with CM93) that can be jury rigged in not time

Already done. OpenCPN for the plotter software, PyPilot for the autohelm.
