Hi people,

Just as a matter of interest does anyone have an idea on the price to transport a 23ft triple-keel 'Snappie' from Essex to the Irish Sea (Wales)?

Just considering my options..

Many thanks,

Nick

Three years ago our Sabre 27 was sold from Walton to a welsh owner. It cost him about £ 1000 with the lifts either end. (Plus another lift into the water at destination)

Don't they weigh a little under 2 tons? How about towing her there yourself? Having said that by the time you add up lifts, hire costs and fuel you could be running up a bill close to £1000 anyhow, unless you can cut corners somewhere. Can you borrow a suitable trailer from someone, is she afloat and could you put her on the trailer straight from the water (not all trailers, or their owners, like to go in the sea.....!) and have you got access to a suitable tow vehicle?

I think book weight is about 1400kg but she has no inboard engine any more and the outboard isn't onboard, not to mention the rudder isn't currently attached so I'd wager under 1000kg. She's on the hard at the club and we have a hoist etc so could just be lifted onto a trailer. Unfortunately I don't have a trailer nor tow-bar so that would limit my options somewhat.

Might it be feasible to motor the boat across using the canal system?
Probably possible and would be easy to do in stages but the mast would have to be carried and could be a hazard in locks.
Thames to London and then to Kenneth and Avon canal, then Bristol Channel, but a slog in a bilge keeper to Milford- I know because I once took a 21 ft Debutante from Sharpness to Milord and the wind was on the nose all the way to Tenby. Rough too!
K&A probably deep enough but you would need to check and you would have to comply with the dreaded BSS.
Trail or probably the best bet

I too recommend putting a request on Shiply

When we bought Brigantia in Woodbridge I didn't fancy bringing her down to Fambridge by sea (we were total novices and there would have been no time for a sea trial) so that's what we did

I wish I could remember the name of the chap who shifted her for us. He's a professional boat mover with an adjustable boat trailer and a hefty 4x4. His rates were very reasonable

He is, I recall, a friend of the younger Seedhouse of Andy Seedhouse Boat Sales.

It's still going to cost hundreds of quid however you crumble the cookie though

I have no experience using Trevor Taylor from Rochford but have heard good reports from others. I believe he does for smaller boats use a 4WD and large trailer.

Jim, Full Circle should know him as he is also in walking [spitting acutally] distance of Ballards Gore, which Jim was discussing at an AGM on Sunday night.

Thanks everyone for the info.... I put a request on Shiply but I did it for the entire trip to Ireland rather than to Wales and then sailing it over...
I'll check out TrevorTaylormarine too...

Sorry guys, just one further question... Has anyone sailed across the Irish sea? Primarily one of the shorter routes a la the ferry route, Holyhead to Dublin Port?

Just out of interest...

thanks,

Nick

Hi
We had our Leisure 22 shipped on the back of a flatbed truck. The driver had an A-Frame and slings etc to lift her on and off.
It was ages ago but there may be someone who knows of a similar offering.

I've done Milford Haven to Kilmore Quay which is much further than that. From Holyhead to Dublin is about 60nm so not too far even in a 23ftr. As ever, weather window is crucial and take into account the big tides.

Thanks guys.. Well we shall see how things pan out. My aim was to sell her but she seems reluctant to go so maybe I'll make the crossing.

I've been to Kilmore Quay. It's quite a way south and looking on the map, yep that's quite a trip from Milford..
