I suspect that Photoshop might have had a hand in it! Actually, I am all in favour of using Photoshop to give a scene the impact that it had visually. With film, we used to use a polarising filter to brighten rainbows, and I imagine that SLR users still do. One problem can be that the foreground lighting will inevitably be flat, with the sun behind you. Also with the help of Mr Adobe:
