Some time ago I got to know about the Home & Dry app for iPhones, (and iPads) - I'm not sure if it was BrendanS who recommended it? It provides a map of the UK with real radar images of rain from the past few hours, along with predictions for the future. It actually goes up to a few days in the future.

I have found it's accuracy to be quite amazing, particularly for an hour or two ahead, and have been able to postpone venturing outdoors in the pouring rain, knowing it will have stopped in the next 10 minutes or 30 minutes, or similar.

Anyway, I've just changed from an iPhone 6S to a Samsung S10, and discover that Home & Dry is not available on Android. I've tried a few similar radar apps for Android, but none come even close to the accuracy of Home & Dry, never mind functionality. The closest, (but no cigar), are Rain Radar, and I am currently trialling RainViewer, (but this doesnt do forecasts).

So.... has anyone found an accurate rain radar app for Android that I might have missed.

I'm not going to be much, or any, help - but its the internet - that is not unusual.

We have the same or similar system here, Australia, and the base data and a base App are available from our Bureau Of Meteorology (BOM). As far as I know its nation wide (and its a big place). The same information is available on some commercial weather sites - I assume they pay to have access. Surely your Met Office produces the data - I'm surprised they don't have an App, though maybe they charge the people who do have Apps for access. I might suggest asking them, or checking their website.

We find it as valuable as you suggest. It is very good for tracking thunderstorms. more useful than 'our' radar (or maybe it offers different data) as you can determine how heavy the rain will be.

Lots to look at... many thanks!

Unfortunately, it looks like its not going to rain for a while, so it might be Thursday before a real life test opportunity :)

"Dark Sky" is the one I use, only rain radar and look ahead, works well.

I had never even thought about using an app. I just take a look at the" last six hours" sequence of the rainfall radar on the Met Eireann website and make a judgement as to whether or not it will rain ( and if so, when) at my location just north of Dublin.

For lightning we use this , we found it works well.
Real Time Lightning Map
I prefer this lightning app - they use the same data but different displays
Lightning & Thunderstorms - United Kingdom, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland
Not an app but works well on Chrome
In conjuction with this site on convective storm forecasts you can prepare for the worst
European Storm Forecast Experiment - ESTOFEX
It gives a good indication of the nature of the convective storms - so you will know that severe wind gust may be the main feature .....

+1 for windy.com either on its website or app. just like predict wind but without the restrictions/cost
