Ragusa V Licata

If you need fuel or gas they'll arrange it, town is just another 5 mins walk from supermarket. Please go to the Il molino pizzeria (10 mins walk from marina) - wow is not enough and so cheap! Loved the space between berths, nothing worse than fender bumping all winter! See you when we return towards the end of next week :)

Just settling in for our first night in a marina for months , no anchor to worry about , no dinghy to climb into to walk the dog , and a full size shower with plenty of water , they must be good ones too has my other half been gone nearly 50 mins now .
we might see you before you see us , we need to do a quick visit to Malta to see family so you never know if the weather good we might just see you over there .

Safe sailing

We have just arrived in Ragusa this morning and shall stay here for a few days before deciding if it is right for us for winter.
We had a walk into the town today and found three pretty decent supermarkets so most daily needs are taken care of.
There are a lot of liveaboards here and so far the social side seems excellent. Pub tomorrow night to meet with the other liveaboards and a bus trip on Saturday night to see a festival of street entertainers in Old Ragusa town.... not bad for a couple of hours here.
The staff are very friendly and helpful but as has been pointed out the showers are a long walk... looks like we will be using ours.

We have to admit we couldn't decide on Licata or Ragusa .our say in Ragusa two years ago was lovely but it did have it down side the entrance and berth if you wanted to sail In the winter it was a problem , toilets and shower quite a walk , which mean people will start it use the boat once and in time the marina will start to look dirty and smelly at times , supermarket , although there where three of them it quite a walk went you have to do it over a long time and the town , well it a lovely Sicilian town but once you been there a while that not much to see , I am not running Ragusa down it a great place to winter out , but I think Licata just beats it , with its big spaces between boat a entrances that you can come and go anytime you want toilet and shower just a min walk one very big super market almost in the marina and the town or should i say city , isn't far to walk , taken all that in consideration I think Licata just beats Ragusa for us any way .
On the end of the day there are both good marina for a winter stay .

Well we will give it this weekend to decide but at the moment we like Ragusa. The shops don't take long to walk to and the walk on the sea front is nice.
I agree about the toilet and showers.
They seem very well set up here to look after and even encourage the live aboards that are here over winter.
What we wanted this year were social activities and other live aboards to talk too. I may be able to tell you more after tonight when they all meet and discuss what anyone wants to do over the coming week.
I particually want a music night so I can try and learn this guitar I have aboard.
We are happy with the berth we have as we can easily get out and back any time should we so wish.
Are there many live aboards in Licarta and do they have any social stuff going on?
At the moment we don't want to sail for 8 hours there and the same back when everything we need seems to be here.

Hi Nos
If you happy there I would stay , Ragusa has been going for three years now so the social side should be well sorted out .here in Licata thing need to be sorted and I am sure within the next week or so things will get sorted out here . If you do decided to come here I would first ask the marina how much room they have just in case it full, there boats coming every day now and I know the pontoon we are on although it has empty spaces on it I understand most of them are booked .
How many liveabord are going to stay ? That I can't answer , I know of a doz or so that are planning to stay and there prob more on the way with the odd month away , but that more then enough for us , we had about 60 live-aboard in Ragusa and it was just too busy .

So where we wintering next year sailaboutvic?

Interesting and useful thread...thanks all.
I think we will be wintering at one of these 2 marinas 2014/15 ( assuming the Lord grants me another year!!) We would want to leave the boat for up to 2 months at a time though. Are these marinas ok for long periods away?
I guess the moorings are stern to using your own anchor ( or is there a mooring?)
We've never sailed the med, are there any issues with longer (overnight ) passages ( like from Sardinia) to Sicily for example)?

Hi
We have and one winter in Ragusa and this year we are in Licata , both marina are fine to leave a boat, we looked after a few when we was in Ragusa and other live aboard did the same but there wasn't a time when there was any problems maybe the odd line needed seeming to , and we had some big winds , here Licata the same apply we beens ask to look after two boats which we happy to do .
Licata is new and since we been here which is only a few days about 25 yacht have arrived and it getting full , we under stand all the gaps on our pontoon are booked . Just yesterday five yacht come in and this morning another three one from Ragusa who decided it wasn't for him too many people .
We expecting a small live aboard group maybe about 30 yacht or so staying all winter , only time will tell .

no issues re the long passages just got to time them right if you wait for the right weather condition you shouldn't have a problem , we sailed over this years in 6 touching 7 fast sail over it was suppose to be a 4 to 5 .

I agree with sailabout Vic. We are looking after a few boats as well.
Depending on where you want to fly to might make your choice easier. I cannot speak about licata but Ragusa seems fine to leave your boat and many people do. The marina do a free transfer to and from the airport 20 minutes away and Ryan air fly to Stansted for cheap prices.

Stern to with lazy lines in Licata.

Certainly cannot see any issues with leaving the boat for any length of time, marina staff are on the ball and you'll always find another live aboard who's happy to keep an eye open as the previous posts have said.
Agree with Vic, we've not made that particular crossing as often as they have but, just pick your weather window and it's fine.
