Ragusa V Licata

Time to think about our winter home again , in 2011 we stayed on Marina Di Ragusa and we had a great time there was only two problem.
one was the eastern entrances it build up big seas and as we sail though out the winter it limited us to when we could go and come back ,
which bring me to the second problem , the berth where so close to each other and the bow lines went out to the middle of the fair way leaving hardly any room to turn out of the berth , on one day alone three yachts ended up on our lines, in some cases people had to drop the bow lines to let there neighbour in , if your just coming in to stay for the winter that's find , but as we want to sail it would had meant we had to ask for help to get in and out , and at 6 or 7 am that could be tricky , lucky they give us a berth at the end of the pontoon so there was no one on one side of us .

Which bring me to Licata , has any one been in there lately ? What's the mooring like ? Is the marina finish ? Are they pontoon berth is lazy lines ? What was your opinion of the marina ?

We'll be in Licata in a few weeks. Spoke to liveaboards who've wintered several times in Ragusa, they say that quite a few boats are moving to Licata this year due to cost and bonus that's been offered. Apparently the people who organise the "daily activities"?! are going there too.

Licata, slightly bigger town with more winter life than Ragusa, which is more of a holiday town.

River outlet flows through Licata harbour, and some have reported a higher level of fouling.

Licata is a very ambitious project - going for the mega yacht community - who aren't there yet. Hence the attractive discounts.
 
I visited both this summer. I think I would return to Ragusa. You'll have more company and the fresh water springs will keep your bottom clean.
As Jim says Licata is at a very early stage. The town is nearby but I'm sure would be quiet. There is a big modern supermarket nearby though.
 
According to the people we met a few days ago, for liveaboard community it's been Ragusa all the way (and they've spent several winters there). They went on to say that quite a few were moving to Licata this winter due to the bonus month.

We have offers from both Licata and Ragusa for winter berth 2013/14 both from 1/10/2013 to 30/4/2014 with RAGUSA offering one extra month either September 2013 or May 2014 free of charge if you take up the winter offer. Both prices are the same for the winter period but Licata faciilties are unfinished whereas Ragusa is complete. Ragusa is easier on the fouling of the boat and last but not least RAGUSA OFFERS FREE TRANSFERS TO THE NEAREST AIRPORT.
That should make things a bit easier for you all to choose. Certainly made my mind up so see you there.

Like I said in an earlier posting we was there in 2011 and we had a great time with lot of liveaboard , we understand the free transfers are only for the new airport and as I under stand it It doesn't have flight thought out winter , also we been told Ragusa is going to be around 200 euros more for us then it is in Licata , Ragusa is a good winter stop over the problem we have is we sail thought out the winter and the berth and so close Sid eBay side and In front that getting in and out can be a problem if you staying in all winter then it great course there no where you boat and go , very cosy ,
the other problem is the eastern
Entrances the seas pile up and if there been a easterly it can by quite a few days before it calm down , if it wasn't for then two problems we would go there again .

I've basically been emailing the Licata marina and checking blogs from people who've recently been there, showers etc are finished. Town sounds good, gym looks fantastic - time will tell, optimistic that it will fill our desires.

The free airport transfers sound great at Ragusa and it seems there's a close winter liveaboard community as well, plus being much closer to the ferry dock (good for day hopping to Malta).

All down to what makes one happy really, especially seeing as its no longer cost related! Speaking of which, anyone else hoping to ski Etna this winter? Renting a chalet for a luxury week away or mad enough to buy a Vespa? :)

good grief such a dilemma I do hope you make the correct choice. By the way some airlines fly all year from this airport but don't take my word as you can't believe everything you read on this forum
 
This is a bit like a "which anchor?" shouting match - err - sorry, debate.

People strongly defend their choice . . .

The reality is that you're spoilt for choice. Both are well above the average for price and facilities. Decisions will depend on some single minor feature which tips the balance for you

From what I've seen on the Ryanair website, they are flying from Comiso to Stansted throught the winter - you can book flights up to and including xmas anyway. The free transfers are a definite winner.

We're off to Ragusa - finally escaping the Balkans - looking forward to a sociable winter - we chose it over Licata as thought there would be more life based on previous winter's reports.

Let's hope so! Having lived in a half-built marina for several of our years aboard, I'd avoid them like the plague if they plan to build over the winter period.

That's good news about Ryanair ,

If your looking for a big liveaboard community , if it anything like it was in 2011 . you won't be disappointed , I think you will enjoy it there .

We still not decided where we will go .

Popped in today for the night. Facilities are finished in Licata, marina staff helpful, all very clean etc. Supermarket 5 mins walk, town very close. Can't comment on liveaboard style as only here for 24 hours for now.
 
Just arrived in Licata , first impression , looking good , very big supermarket , lot of nice fresh food and just 5 mins walk . Marina staff help full . We spoken to a few who are staying the winter , big spaces between boat , so coming and going isn't a problem for people like us who sail thought the winter months . Nothing organises yet but is early days and I sure things will as soon as people start to settle in , free rides to the station and back shower and toilets just a very small walk away , we not got into the town yet , have to wait till another day .

Looks like we here for the winter
