Raggie damages my boat!!

And all in front of witnesses, sailing boat out of control, bumps and scratches it's way down my hull leaving substantial scratches presumably with his boom, and also manages to pull out one of the stanchion bases in an attempt to stop himself being swept downriver with the tide.

I have part of the name of the culprits boat, so far no one has attempted to make contact with me to apologise or offer to put right the damage, thought that should be the least he could do. I have most of the name of his boat, but it could be anywhere on the Exe or even from elsewhere.

Should I mount a search and destroy operation, ram any raggie who comes within 15' of me, fit torpedo tubes, keelhaul any suspect raggie crew or put the whole incident down to experience?

From all the recent postings from the raggie brigade about our wash I'd have thought them all to be jolly decent fellows, or maybe we all have one or two rotten apples in our respective barrows? Nyway it at least dispels the myth that all raggies are pearagons of virtue whilst all stinkpots are scum of the earth. Quadruple the tax on sails I say and let only raggies pay light and buoyage dues, we can at least plough our own furrow! <G>
 
Ah well, John just shows neither raggies or stinkers are perfect. I guess the boat in question was trying to sail in a confined space. That's a raggie trait that causes as much annoyance as wash does to them.

We get it a lot in Poole harbour, 40ft plus raggies sailing in main fairway, zig zagging around, when there is a clear sign at harbour entrance saying 'USE ENGINE'.

I get a bit confused with this us & them stuff. OK I'm a raggie at the moment but I've spent a lot of my time as a youth aboard MFVs in Scotland as well as mucking about in motorboats, rowing boats, sailing dinghies, rubber rings, surfboards & the odd oil barrel! Surely what the vast majority of us have in common is that we love the sea & our common interest is much greater than our differences.
However what we also have in common is that we are human, and as such have our fair share of dickheads. THe raggie stereotypical dick is a loud mouthed upper class twat shouting starboard authoritatively on everything that moves & the stinkie one an East End Barrow boy made good blasting everything in sight.

However rather than concentrate on differences of style ie raggie v stinkie. What we really ought to be debating is differences of nature. Good guys v. the bad guys! Name & shame springs to mind.

As a 40ft plus Raggie sailor in Poole I have some sympathy, but for the record the signs in Poole actually say 'USE of ENGINE recommended'. Actually there are also signs that say 10kts max which are ignored pretty well as well. Poole is a beautiful place (the tourist office says so on its flags and I do agree) but it is a place to avoid for anyone of a nervous disposition, Raggie or Stinker, especially on a hot Sunday afternoon around the chain ferry. When we came in last Sunday there were 5 pwcs chasing Barfleur's wash (one fell off just in front of us as we went in under engine, no wind at the time) plus we had two 20kt plus Sunseekers pass either side of us head on close enough to spray water in the cockpit - oh and the chain ferry pulled out as well! There was also a 27 ft Raggie drifting outbound under sail (no wind) who probably had a severe shock when he finally looked astern and saw Barfleur coming...

Can you imagine what Poole must seem like to a first time visitor as he tries to find his way in - we have met several Dutch visitors who said never again.

What we really need is the 10% of idiots, Raggie or Stinker, to show some common courtesy to their fellows, it doesn't happen on the roads so I doubt it will ever happen afloat but we live in hope.
 
Had the same thing happened to me in Herm with my last boat. French Raggie got out of control dropped anchor swung right round my boat chain and all damaging gel coat, railings, outdrive, stickers the whole side of the boat basically then once we untangled him he legged it. Tried to complain to harbour authorities but they werent interested. Trie to claim of his insurance but he denied he was ever there despite witnesses.

Also saw a raggie trying to sail int o victoria marina in a force 6 westerly, he was trying to head east into the marina. Harbour authority told him to bugger off before he damaged some boats or use his outboard, daft git couldnt beleive he even tried it, it was aFrenchy again!!

I have it on good authority that the culprit is a novice sailor in a rented boat whose own boat is a badly scratched speedboat, no insurance or training and a accent and voice like Jade from Big Brother.

Hmm nice story of a very talented "Raggie" who obviously knows a back way into Victoria Marina!! "East into Victoria Marina!!!" - that would be west into victoria marina!!! do motor boats have compasses!!! and was the wind really westerly - the direction is that which it blows from!!! - though that doesn't really matter to motor boats does it - though when they blow down onto my boat in the marina after a particually badly executed manovre think most should learn about that wind stuff (even if you have 2 engines - bow thruster and patio doors..)

We got damaged by the raggies a couple of years ago in Treguier, and yes it was an English boat, which I won't name because eventually after a lot of hassle and letters we were able to claim off their insurance.
The tide runs very strongly through the marina pontoons there, and as they left their berth early one morning they crashed into the stern of our boat, puncturing and ripping the tender and badly bending the davits. We were asleep at the time, and shot out of bed to see them disappearing half way down the river. A young lad in a dinghy chased them and told them what had happenned in case they were unaware, but they ignored him. We tried to raise them on the radio but they wouldn't answer, but we were leaving too, and managed to catch up with them near les Heaux lighthouse and got a reply on the radio. We managed to exchange names and addresses, and they could see our mangled dinghy hanging limply from the bent davits.
It just shows that there are uncaring gits in all walks of life (they were all bank-managers on a jolly!)
 
Yes I do agree with you Jim, have said much the same many times in the past. My post was somewhat tongue in cheek after all the anti motorboat posts of late. I do not have any problems with 99% of all boats in the Exe, even the damage I've just sustained was accidental, but would have been nice if the culprit had had the good manners to try and make contact (in the other sense of the word!), still maybe he doesn't know how to.

Couldn't agree more. When I drop my sail (like, when I want to get in and there's no room to tack up the creek) I'm engine driven. Just like you. Admittedly I can't get on a plane very easily, but think about it, 26 ft long, 5 ft draft. On a plane? Don't go there.
 
very sorry old boy your motor boat was damaged ? but on the whole the blasted nuisance that these motor boat chappys cause is mostley unblievable they go round the trots at speeds as if there in a power boat race causing megga wash
plus scalding every person that happens to be cooking at the time !
i have even when many miles off shore had this chappy in a motor boat asking me
which way the land was ??!!* i said its that way and off he went?
no i say put them in the water ski area safer for everybody.

Oops from the east may be I should read my posts before I send them, oh well you all know what I mean.

BTW Motor boats dont have a nice keel in the wind to stop the bow being blown off course and not all have twin engines or bow thrusters!
