rafting on a buoy

I know I should know this but I'm not sure of the process and therefore avoid the situation.
Do you try and pick up the buoy then come against the other boat or do you raft with the other boat first then somehow attach to the buoy afterwards ? Thanks for any advise

Definitely the latter for us. You don't want to be hitting or swinging in to the other boat whilst trying to pick up the buoy.
 
its a good point but how do you know the buoy will hold two boats

In some places eg Salcombe the HM will assign you to a buoy, in summer you will be rafted and the HM knows each buoy's loading. Once you are rafted he will send a lad in a rib to pass your bow warp through the buoy and back.
