Radio with good sounds.

Iam fed up with not getting a decent reception on my vhf radio on my boat
too much interference.. etc and quite jucy on the amps

I usually listen to R4 on my ssb radio

So just to listen to music I use my Nexus pad with bluetooth connection to a Mini bose speaker
bloody marvelous

If you can get Wi Fi connection to your pad, well... the choice of music is yours

oh yeah... another thing

when you go home, just pop the speaker in your pocket

How wrong!! Presumably you would also say that valves are better than transistors or chips???!!!!!
DAB is cr^p where we are, sounds like the speaker is inside a goldfish bowl and don't get me going on the content of the zillions of radio stations where the local nursary could do much, much better.

The one thing that is conveniently forgotten about DAB is the amount of power required to run what is, essentially, a small computer and not a radio receiver.
I was fitting-out in Falmouth a couple of years back and went out to buy a portable DAB radio. The first set of cells (the big ones which used to be called U2s) lasted about three days and there were SIX of them inside.

They have improved on some models. I have a Pure Elite One 2.5 watts max will run on 12v , twin speaker DAB and FM , MP3 or laptop out , play again feature , rechargeable battery pack as an extra, no long wave unfortunately so I still have an old tranny.

Getting back to the question........once you`ve had all the wax washed out of your ears.........and done away with the notion that the cheapest way to upgrade the sound quality of your radio is to consume a six pack of lager (evyshing shounz greeeat).....Then a good way is to get some decent speakers.....These aren`t at all bad...... http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/car-audio.aspx/kicker-kb6000-speakers er....if you can get hold of some... (just google kb kicker 6000)

If it has to be radio then there are many options out there. The choice of Bose is the best speakers you can get, give them a ring and they will sort you out, (I'm talking from experience, they've helped me) - they are not the cheapest but certanly they are the best, you're going the right way about it. I'm a fellow audiophile so let me know what you finally decide upon.

On the Exe? We get great reception at Starcross.
Maybe your aerial needs sorting?

What a lot of bile against dab. You have a choise, most dab radios have VHF fm select which is best for you. Most of the time I listen on dab. I have a simple domestic pure élan 11 on the chart table running on 12v. The telescopic antena gives a better reception than I ever got from a car radio. I also have a Bluetooth transmitter that feeds the waterproof speaker in the cockpit. I also get a good weeks listening on the internal batteries . A modern dab does not have to be power hungry.
Keep your options open.

You may well get great reception, but that won't improve the audio quality of DAB to anywhere near FM quality. Also, it won't give you anything other than the BBC national stations in stereo; all the rest are mono. DAB is just one big expensive con.
