Yep with height, power AND a good installation I can frequently raise Jersey Radio from the Needles, and also get Brixham, Falmouth and even Cross Corsen from Jersey

Is there a scam going on? No, this is boating and you have not learnt the first lesson yet. You pay over the odds for everything!

Your 10 meter whip will be great on a flat sea or ina marina as it gets it's better range by concentrating all the gain over a very shallow angle.
In a big sea or on a windy day in a raggie the last thing you want is a large high gain aerial, as for a fair part of the time the aerial power will be pumped into the sea or skywards and the range will be a fraction of that given by your original posting.
A higher aerial is a great advantage but a long, high gain aerial may at some times be a disadvantage especially in severe conditions and on a smaller craft.

Hope I haven't confused you even more.
