It was (probably still is) a requirement to record link calls via coast stations etc, plus Pan Pan and Mayday calls. I believe all that was really necessary was to make a note of time/position/message in the ship's log. Commonsense probably applies, if there is any chance you or someone else might need to know what or when was said or heard, like during an emergency close by put it down in the log.

Its a requirement to have one, a small book with "Radio Log" suffices and it does not have to have any entries if inspected. I have entered a couple of routine traffic calls to Coastguard but as is said may come in handy if involved in Mayday.

That's the way I read it Haydn, but not to worry, it can also sink with the boat, unless of course it's women, children and the radio log first!!!

Never heard of one of these before.

Not so much when your sinking but Mayday relay and situations where you have received position information which may later be required in any enquiry. Our VHF course bloke emphasised that the ships log is not an acceptable alternative and your licence is dependant on having a "Radio Log" even if as already said no entries.

Well Chris, I bet that 99.9% of pleasure users don't have one. I've been out on many boats, pleasure and charter, and never seen one. Still can't see what it's required for. Big ships maybe. But not us?

Don't think I'll lose too much sleep over not having it.

I spose its fair to say that hell of a lot of pleasure users don't have licence so its all a bit academic, and I would'nt dispute your 99.9% but our instructor was so insistant that I went to shop at lunchtime during course and bought a little book for a quid. Wrote "Radio Log" on the front, and put it in case with licence. When I changed boat, got it out out wrote new call sign on front cause I could'nt remember it, and entered a couple of transmissions. and now put it away again. The handbook for the course says you must have one to validate licence along with the "terms" booklet, but its ont boat so I cannot quote.

I must be in the 0.1% coz, I's got one!! It's empty, but I got one! With the name of the boat, callsign and MMSI number and Epirb serial etc. Just as an aside, who can remember their callsign, DONT look if your onboard!! Mines MQSN9.

Well I do know that Mike Alph Zulu Romeo 2 - and I didn't look, couldn't look cos all paperwork's on the boat!

Before tcm comes back with extra sad git award, yes I know but for some reason like some phone nos, this sticks in my brain. Not much else does of course!

Naturally, have never used the call sign, in fact hardly ever use the vhf, only to find Muckyfarter hiding behind some big rock in Torbay

C'mon whats your callsign? Mind you, you could tell me anything and I'd have to believe you! I was asked for my radio logbook, when my boat instalation was inspected and I didn't have one, lots of tutting went on and I bought one!! I am sad!

Re: Ships log?

Hell Duncan,

You hav'nt been going out on yer boat without yer terms booklet have you!!!
Surely everyone knows you have to have yer terms booklet with you to validate yer VHF licence. Methinks we have uncovered a can of worms here. Can I have the sad git hat after Colin?

Re: Ships log?

I might have a terms booklet; if I knew what it was.....

Suggest we discuss this over a beer (non alcoholic) if and when we meet up (is that good enough for a passage plan?) in Poole over the weekend to race dingys.

I was going to get a portable generator to make toast but clearly I need to rethink the volume of paperwork I should be carrying......../forums/images/icons/smile.gif
