jfm, I should have said I have 3rd station controls (throttles, thrusters, windlass) in the port side of the cockpit. I intend using them too, but IMO there have been far too many times when I have needed to communicate with Mrs Magnum and failed or ended up shouting, which does nothing for our stress levels. There's also the not inconsiderable benefit of staying in contact when she and my daughter go down below.

The Senna solution sounds pretty good. One question for users. Can you still hear ambient noise with the headset in place?

My DIY solution addressed this point by only having one ear piece - the other side of the headset was just a pad that sat just above the ear.
The idea was that you could listen with either ear - SWMBO in one and dockmaster in the other - if you know what I mean.
The Senna headsets don't actually go over the head - more round the back of the neck and "kind of" hang on your ears.
Having used both, there isn't really an issue - you can hear both locally and via the headset.
But I take your point - thats why I designed the DIY ones with only one earpiece.

Just one question for jfm, why wired?
If you have reasons for not trusting the reliability of radio remotes, I'd be interested to hear them, because I had a chance not long ago to try the Yacht Controller thingie, and its convenience is mind blowing!

No particular reason - the boat came with wired as standard spec (part of the ZF control package) and imho the marginal benefit of going wireless is very small, so I just stick with wired. The cable is long. Nothing wrong with wireless of course if well engineered as I believe yachtcontroller is, and well installed which you'd need to check

Always been one to attempt the impossible.
For some time I thought it useful to have a headset to communicate with the navigator, plus hard wire to the VHF or what is on offer (marine band), plus and by design effective ear defenders.
Did have a brief look at those used for private light aircraft and motor racing pits, but unfortunately drew a blank.
Would anyone who has used the Sabreleisure brand been able to cover some or all of my interest please?

No problem with hearing ambient noise but I sometimes sling the headset round my neck if having a conversation with staff or others assisting with docking.

I have also added a lanyard which clips from the band to the LJ for a bit of additional security.
