Hi All
Looking for a way of communicating by radio to person on foredeck(wife) without shouting!(trouble else).
They seem to iuse some system on motor bike training. I also think I have read about such systems in boating mags.Anyone have any directions as to where to get reasonably priced system?Or maybe one to sell?
Cheers

bt head sets

PMR radio. Look on eBay. Hands free kits (headsets) are cheap too.

We use them when I'm 60' in the air working at top of the mast. Maplin had them on offer with headsets a few years ago. Never bother for anchoring and just use hand signals in daylight.

Overarm wave forward, point direction to move. Length of arm swing indicates amount of throttle.
Hand behind back side to side waggle at wrist for stop or up and down to slow.
Underarm wave backwards for reverse.

Just invent something similar and agree meaning with crew.

So used to doing it that we don't bother making much eye contact to check action being taken. I do see some others yelling loudly at each other, I suppose that's another option. :D

We no longer find the need, just use hand signals if necessary. SWMBO up front for marinas and me for moorings etc, although we switch every now and again. However if we did then a headset is the way to go, but not what I would call cheap (or I looked in the wrong place).

When working on systems and out of sight of the other guy, we used voice activated units with headsets. Quite cheap and hands free. Range was 200mts, still got them somewhere in the w/shop. Switch went: off/on/ptt/voice. One needed to make some noise to activate it or the first word got mangled.

A friend has a loudspeaker on the doghouse of his Fisher 37. This has the great advantage of communications with his wife on the foredeck being one-way only.

This is a recurring question on the mobo forum because the members there with larger boats can't even see their partner from the helm while mooring. There have been several accepted solutions there, from semi-homemade sets to quite expensive dedicated systems. They generally agree on the need for hands-free operation (so either voice-activated transmission or preferably an always-on link) and full duplex so one person can say "STOP!" or "NOW!" even if the other is chattering away.

This system seems like a solid choice, for a price: https://www.sena.com/product/sph10/

There are cheaper options available. Motorcycle intercoms are a good place to start.

An older and clunkier-looking analogue system that no longer seems to be available was called "Marriage Saver" :D

For the few times we have needed this we have used cheep Bluetooth clip_on_ear handsfree devices (from £10 each) and just phone. Our two smartphones can stay in the cabin and once the initial call has been made, redials are just by taping the earpiece twice.

For us because the fixed is below - which is one reason we have a handheld.

"Er……hand signals? SWMBO is very likely looking forwards"

Most signals are foredeck to helm, and whoever's at the helm is quite often looking forwards
