Radio Checks

For goodness sake call up your marina,
I tried that - got no response ... could be they didn't hear, or we didn't receive or they couldn't be arsed .... (mind u - it's not our marina!)

again - once a season or major change in the setup is enough - but yes - we've done it and we have a problem - no we don't head back in although it does make you consider your plan - which as we were going out on a nice day within mobile phone range we didn't change ... and of course - it means you know there is a problem with your set so you can get about fixing it.

Just to confirm, coast guard won't initiate a search if you've logged your passage plans with them simply because so many people don't bother (or simply forget) to confirm safe arrival.

On the odd occasion I've needed to check the radio I've simply called my local marina.

As to why so many people do it, it's probably so they feel big and important as they head intrepidly out to sea, calling "the tower" just like they've seen pilots do in movies. Impresses The Wife dontcha know?

To continue the flight analogy, I was taught in the US that failure to close your flight plan or amend your ETA results in the SAR choppers being in the air within 30 minutes.

As my FAA examiner said your first failure to close your flight plan and subsequent SAR deployment is on us, any others you pay for if they are false alarms.

So I am not surprised that our CG don't want to get involved with passage plans and their reporting.
