Re: VHF operator for Hire [laugh]

Well Grumpy. You do make this boating lark sound very exciting. More like a military embarkation project. Everything planned to presision.Where as we just bum about and splosh over to Guernsey or Jersey for the week end!! Then remember half way that we have forgotten the tea bags so have to drink beer. Take your point about training though. I've been trying to get Tutts to practice driving the boat. Now she's ok about twenty miles out, with the auto pilot on, whilst reading a book. I can go down for a pee if I'm quick. But as for man over board. If I fall in. Would I be better drowning or getting run over. Any thoughts??

Good Heavens - you were having a bad day, weren't you. Hopefully, stress levels are back to normal now /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. No point in going back over our exchange, blow by blow and I certainly wasn't criticising anyone. The message was in the last line -listen to the voices of experience. There's an old cliche, isn't there 'A man reads one book and thinks he's an expert, he reads two and becomes a consultant'
As for not having offered you advice before, I have been Down Under for the past 2-3 months and returned only 48 hours ago. Which meant I was probably feeling worse than you! And as for a ride on our boat, you are more than welcome - but you have to pay your own air-fare. Have a nice day /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Horses for Courses Haydn, but I bet when she gets a bit more used to it she will love it, and you can pee all day /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif I guess that sometimes I forget people are all really different, unfortunately I perhaps need to spend more time with normal people like you lot on here, it would perhaps make me realise I could chill a bit and still survive, but I will just try a bit at a time until I get used to it /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif what IS worrying me, is that I never normaly get excited about anything, but for some reason, I seem to have been taken over by a bug on this adventure /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Perhaps I AM NOW getting a life /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: VHF operator for Hire [laugh]

If I can put my twopennoth in:

Like Grumpy I am new to boating. I suppose I am at that age where taking risks is losing its appeal so I want to do it right, which to me means being safe, keeping my family and friends safe and being courtious to other boat users.

To achieve this I think I need the formal training - I too did an excellent Powerboat Level 2 course and will shortly be starting a day skipper theory course.

I am however a firm believer in learning from experience whether this be my own or someone elses. I have to say that this is a great forum for gaining that experience. I have asked questions on here that I would have been to embarrassed to ask face-to-face and always received useful, thorough answers which I have appreciated very much and have added considerably to my knowledge.

Sometimes what these answers, and other peoples questions and answers, tell me is that I need to find out more or proceed with caution or stop worrying. Whatever, I feel better for people telling me this.

So Grumpy I agree with you, knowledge is everything, but please don't discount the value of the opinions of those who have "been there, done that". There are a lot of characters on here but I don't think I have ever had a pretentious answer just well given advice with the occasional banter and leg pull.

That is what makes this such a great forum, some have boats costing millions, some have boats costing a few thousand and some don't even have boats but what we all share is a common love of boating whether we have been doing for years or just a few months.

Grumpy,

I agree with you far better that SWMBO nows how to operate the boat and all the boats equipment.
Can I point those that doubt this to the attached link.

They say a little knowledge is a bad thing but complete ignorance is hardly bliss!

Stay happy /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Just be careful what you say to our Dr Boomer - she'll have you analysed before you can say Freud! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Well, that is a good example. On my craft I will have a laminated card with details of safety proceedure, VHF proceedure and other important data in case of emergency or my presence being temporarily unavailable (MOB /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif). Any skipper coming on board and unfamilier with the craft will be able to refer to the emergency card for FULL details.

The sheer number of Mr Grumpy1's contributions to this forum make for a very interesting case-study. And as for Freud, it seems that this is way the Australians prefer their eggs and bacon. At the more mundane level of everyday medicine, my advice to you, Mrs Beddoes, is to stop stripping your clothes off. Its awfully cold out at the moment you know. But its lovely to be back. G'day /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
