radio 5

I Like to listen to Radio 5. Sport News ETC.
Mobo came with car type radio cassete + car type extendable arial (ariel)?
Anyway reception in My bit of North Wales is rubbish anyway.
What set up does the Panel think would be best for reception for MW.
Do I need a digital Radio, different spike, ETC.
Tried switching everything else off including fridge,heater(use the boat all year round).
Noticed last night as I was fiddling about with connections and checking fuses and such like.When I held on to the ariel the reception was clearer,but I don,t want to listen to "Talk Sport" etc hanging off the Port side in the p**sing rain!

some people connect the aerial to a stanchion providing a nice big pole going all the way round the boat

Come on Richard, you used to play with cars! You had the same problem with grotty aerials and grotty bodywork.

Bad earth on the aerial!!!!

Dunno how you fix it tho'......!!!

Radio five is available on 909Khz and 693Khz. If you want to receive at extended range you need a communications receiver. The Nasa HF3 is a good choice connected to a backstay antenna, Not only will it give good results on broadcast stations but will receive weatherfax and radiotelex etc.

Yep I listen on 909 and 693,(909 seems better).
Where do I source a Com R "Nasa HF3"?
Remember your talking to someone who can only fix things with a Lump hammer!

Sure a communications receiver is best but may not be much better.... You might try another old car radio, get one with mechanical tunning cos it will hold its tuning with power off. There is no reason to believe a digital will work any better than an old car radio.
Yes an insulated backstay on a yacht would work well. Wot you don't have a backstay or a mast.?...my condolences.
Your best bet is to try to find the longest whip type aerial you can find. Or try wire wrapped around an old fishing pole or a long wire between flag pole and stumpy mast on cabin top.

No reason you should know this in Western Oz, Will, so just to explain, when he says 'digital radio' he means DAB, which gives very good reception for BBC Radio 5 but is a digital as opposed to analogue signal. They only work short range, unlike 909 and 693 which are of course ground wave broadcasts, so in the right conditions travel a long way. I've received 909 in Portugal! DAB radio's very short range isn't a problem in a crowded island like this. It'll never catch on in Australia, except in the cities.

Ah he is talking digital transmission as opposed to a digitally tuned car radio...............thanks olewill
