I have a Garmin GPSMAP 702/902 Series chart plotter on which I have NMEA 0183. I wanted to fit a radar and I was hoping to find a second-hand Raymarine unit. Can anyone help advise on which models would be able to communicate with my chart plotter? As far as I can make out from the manual my chart plotter is able to display and manage radar.

Only Garmin ones compatible with your plotter. Radar imaging isn't communicated via nmea 0183 (marpa targets may be). It's done via proprietary protocols. The raymarine plotter I ought only 6 years ago isn't even compatible with their newer quantum radar

Radar does not work on NMEA and you cannot fit Raymarine radar to a Garmin plotter, you need to buy a Garmin radar.

If you can pop along to the Southampton Boat Show today or tomorrow visit the Garmin stand they are really, really helpful. Answered a lot of my difficult questions about kit integration and network protocols that I threw their way yesterday.

I've arrived at the conclusion that you should have one supplier of electronic kit onboard as there are too many differences in implementation of the different protocols.

Another handy tip from Garmin is there is an update facility for charts. I though I had to buy a new set of charts, but that is not the case and about £50.
