I'm not familiar with yacht radars.

Is an oldish radar likely to be compatible with a modern chart plotter display or does the display need to be one specific to the antenna?

I'm looking at a boat with a (I think) Raymarine radar, the existing display is the size of a postcard on end and the case is roughly a cube some 10 in per side. Not very good description, sorry, no better spec available.

Can you just plug an antenna into a chartplotter or does it require the original display/control box to feed it?

Older radars work like an old CRT television. There isn't any signal processing, they just directly plot the signal returns onto the screen (this is true even of the early LCD displays, although from your description it sounds like you have a CRT model)

If you want to add the radar to a plotter, then you will need a newer digital radar (or someone techy who's up for an interesting project)

If you could say which model radar and plotter it would help. Raymarine radars and plotters are usually compatible if from the same era.
