Can anyone in the South-West recommend (from personal experience) a GOOD radar course covering more advanced use of the apparatus?

I have used radar on my own boat for a number of years for successful collision avoidance and making a landfall in poor visibility but in view of the risks of encountering a succession of fast moving commercal vessels in the separation schemes I would like some professional instruction in its use in more complex collision situations.

I am aware of the considrable variation in the quality of many RYA evening class courses and I would not like to waste my money on something which would not meet my requirements.

Any suggestions please?

John,

I would highly recommend Robert Avis (http://www.robertavis.com/) having done the course myself. Robert uses the Royal Navy's simulators for the training. But Robert is based around Southampton/Portsmouth so might be too far for you.

I did the RYA course with Plymouth sailing school at QAB last July and thought it was excellent - cost about 90GBP I think. I forget the name of the instructor but he was also responsible for teaching the RNLI. And you can get excellent sausage sandwiches next door.
