Radar choice

Why not go for the JRC 1000? Same display unit as the 1500 but smaller radome. I found MES excellent when I bought mine both price and service. They even sent me a whole new radar to try when the fitter had problems with the first (turned out to be a missed connection).

Re: Radar choice (Furuno on a stick!)

a) I chose between those and a Furuno 1622, approx £995 last yr, is fine, lots of dedicated buttons so you dont get confused by menus etc, 1722 is sim but bigger screen. 15 inch radome, 2.2k, 16 mile.
b) after much deliberation, I had a post made, 2m tall at stbd quarter, therefore easy to service(stand on a box), no reduction in range, less swinginging about in breeze, and a useful spot for navtex aerila, GPS, downlight for cockpit, etc etc.

Also consider fitting the scanstrut platfotm to the mast while it is down - you have to drill 16 holes for the 5mm rivets and wielding lazy tong riveter up the mast is not easy....

Also think through where you are going to put the junction box below decks - the cable is not very flexible will bend to about a coil to about 7 cm radius. Talk to MES they maybe able to sort out a multiway connector at deck level

PS Got a JRC 1500 as well and happy with it -

I wouldn't bother to have one at all. Waste of money. Waste of amps. Takes all the interest out of sailing, staring at the stupid thing. Just go to sea and use seamanship.

Re: Compass...permanently low prices

I wouldn't suggest buying a radar from Compass unless you want it to arrive in jigsaw format!

Still heard nothing regarding my table despite the promises of a speedy resolution. Any comment from the YBW representatives here?????

Re: Compass...permanently low prices

I ispoke to Compass again, saying that they could have more of my business if they priced the radar sensibly, but the UK GM is on hols and the girls 'couldnt do anything to prices'.

Anyway, as per a flame about Compass a few weeks back, Caveat Emptor. They are great on some things, but awful on others. JRC 1000 - great price JRC 1500 - totally uncompetitive. And Ive still not received my free knife.

Kim, I think you need to look into the knife offer - they dont seem to exist

If you have Raythmarine instruments, and autopilot then I would suggest stick to Raymarine as it saves all the integration problems that you get from a mixture of kit.

I have the Raymarine 2 KW 5 metres up the mast and get about 12 miles on merchant men. The set is easy to use and beats the Navico/Marconi/JRC that I had in my old boat for both performance and easse of use. But this may be of course because things have moved on.

Seamanship, what\'s that?

Don't want to be as sarcastic as ptk, but I also don't see the relationship between seamanship and the radar.
Unless by seamanship you mean also being good enough at predicting weather conditions, to always avoid poor visibility situations.
But I'd rather call that "luck". ;-)
