Radar Cable

I have a JRC 1500 Radar unit which has only a 10 metre cable for joining the Display to the Scanner, and I need a longer one, probably 15 metres.

JRC sell a 15 metre cable, but it seems very expensive.

Does anybody know a reasonably priced source of suitable cable and/or connectors to either replace the 10 metre one, or add an extension on to it.

Thanks

Dave

I am in the middle of fitting a JRC 1000 which is pretty much the same system apart from the power of the Radome, so I guess the cable is the same. I have had to cut the cable in half to join it at the base of the mast, and am proposing to join it with choc blocks. If you cannot get a bit of pukka JRC cable then you could probably use a mish mash of other cables.
There is a diagram in the manual of what core does what in the cable, many of them are carrying power, or relatively simple signals, which you could extend using some regular wires, there are only 2 cores I think which are individually screened and probably need special attention, some sort of co-ax possibly.
The other thing to do would be to talk nicely to the supplier of the system and see if they will do a 15m cable as a swap for your 10m as the system comes with both options.

I don't know about the spec of the cable for the radar, but Maplins do a range of cables designed for Video use which have a combination of screened and unscreened conductors - it may well be that one of those has a suitable configuration.

Maplin also do multipole connectors for the same purpose which would be suitable for joining the cable inside. There is also a multipole "buccaneer" which would be suitable for connection at deck level - but I don't really like the deck mounted connectors

If you bought the 1500 new it should have come with 15m. I bought one a couple of years ago and it did then (standard issue).

I found it OK to cut the cable at the mast and use a high quality "clamp" type chocolate box connector (rather than screw only). Joining box is inside cabin in a dedicated box.

Make sure you join the foil RF shield and advice I was given was NOT to ground the device as it will blow if electrics are ever incorrectly wired. Works OK without.

I also foil lined (and covered with tape) the joiner box and added a similarly treated "divider" pice of ply to keep electrics isolated/shielded

Thanks for the idea. I had not thought of using seperate screened cables. The radar came fitted with the boat, and because the cable was too short the display is currently fitted in the heads, hence my desire to move it.

Thanks again
