Having had a look at previous posts, thinking of fitting Furuno 1715 radar. Anyone know how tricky this is for the first time buyer? Or should I think about paying someone else to do it? Also fitting heating, but decided thats probably best done by someone who has done it before.

I fitted most of the radar bits myself, only tricky bit is the radar dome on the mast. I had the local man take down the mast and fit the dome bracket to the mast, and put the mast up again.

The rest is just a matter of routing the wiring and screwing the screen and gubbins to the nav table bulk head.

A friend of mine went up the mast to fit the radome when we were ready to do that.

Just need to plan where the screen is going, where the radome is going to be mounted, (mast or stern mount) and sort each part.

Good luck

Dont know this particular set, but my JRC was simply "plug and play". The only difficult bit was the mast support bracket (needed nimonic rivets and a ladder type rivet gun) and routing the cable down the mast. Did it myself no problems but wouldnt have even tried with the mast up.

But taking the mast down gives you chaNCE TO CHECK SO MANY OTHER BITS THAT i'D RATHER PAY FOR THAT THAN FOR A RIGGER TO INSTALL WITH THE MAST UP.

Sorry about the caps

Thanks for the advice, I can see things would be a lot easier with mast down, I wasn't thinking of doing this so it seems I need to find someone to install at least the scanner.

I have done both myself. It all depends how much experience you have of installing electrical and mechanical things, especially on a boat, and how GOOD you are at it. If you are an experienced, tidy and conscientious worker then you won't have any trouble installing either as the installation instructions are pretty good. But if in doubt, get it done as they won't charge a huge amount compared with the damage you could cause.

Its fairly easy to do as long as you are careful; most units are "plug & play"; fitting the radome is hardest & deciding where the display will fit might need some thought; running the cable can be tricky depending on access.
I suspect proessional installation will be at least a days work for someone plus a helper if up th mast so could be a few £££.
