ASAP selling these around £27. I see elsewhere they can be bought for £8.50. You appear to be able to buy complete housing and filter for around £15 found on the web ! What is the wisdom from forumites about buying “cheap” cf. the real deal ?

Divide £27 by £8.50 then multiply that by the number of filters used in a season plus the number of spare carried.

I'd consider a copy housing, but would not touch a cheap copy filter element. I doubt the copies have the Racor "Aquablock" and some of them will probably have a fraction of the filter medium.

You misunderstood my query - my fault no doubt. I’m questioning quality rather than specifically cost.
I fully understood the question and was applying the Cost/Quality/Speed equation.

This will be your primary 30 micron filter. How often do you change that? Even if you changed the twice as often as an original you are still cash positive. As for the third element speed you will need to check the filter weekly instead of monthly.

Seeing @PaulRainbow 's post the secondary filter, 10 micron, should always be original manufacturer as this is your last line of defence.

I've used cheap "Racor" filters from Amazon or Fleabay for years without issues. Changed every two seasons. But as Sandy wrote, I only use OEM secondary filters, changed annually.

I’ve been getting quality filters from motor factors, the Racor filters are very common on lorry’s etc., the last 4 I bought were £22 total

FYI my Racor is a 10 micron filter. As usual Paul R comments are on the ball. Thanks.

The cheap chinese copy of the Racor is mostly made by a company called Rongsun. When my firm overhauled all the fridge system compressors on the West Coast Mainline Pendolino train fleet we could not find a firm to supply the internal automotive style filter without paint on the casing, until we found Rongsun, who were most helpful.

The nonsense I experienced about why firms would not sell me a filter without a paint coating were unbelievable and from so called 'engineers'. It completely escaped their ability to understand where we were using the filer was within a refrigeration system (the gases and oils would have dissolved the paint and caused us massive problems from the resultant goo). Rongsun were sanguine about it, and as the order was for almost 1,000 filters were happy to make a special run specifically for us.

We cut open and examined and then put on test their filters and could find no concerns nor reasons not to use them. Indeed I also found they manufacture for many many other firms, including at that time Unipart. The filter media used was of similar quality to the OEM Mahle filters we compared against, indeed was likely the same stuff.

Like a lot of feedback on here, a lot of unsupported nonsense is spoken about stuff by people who have nothing to back up what is simply either a bias or a doubt.

I have used the Racor copies for years and will continue to use them. Others may choose for themselves of course.

I would not buy a cheap "rip off" copy of a Racor filter housing. When I was looking to buy a couple of years ago I did some research and found several reviews on YouTube which convinced me to buy the real thing despite the greater expense. The difference is often in the detail. Suggest you search out those reviews.
