Bit of a tricky one this, i have been to London boat show five times and i really cant help but notice that it is mainly white folks attending, so can any one answer why i hardly ever see any black folks there?.When you leave the streets of London and enter the boat show its all change. Its all so same with boating mags every photo all white, is it the same with the marinas down south regards boat owenership.Please dont think iam racist just curious. a
 
My own observation also, the same at SIBS - did have an interesting talk with a black guy once when looking over the Cutty Sark, but very much an exception
 
It a sad reflection of the times that you fear being accused of racism for just asking an innocent question.
 
Tom - very good point. On another slightly off topic subject but "PC" nonetheless, I was summarily banned from a professional forum for using the term "dumb" as opposed to "non-speaking". No offence had been intended, I simply stem from an age when we would regularly visit the deaf, dumb and blind school to go scrumping........ I wasn't banned for the scrumping bit hehe! It certainly isn't a racist question. I, too, have wondered at this phenomenon which is also obvious in the USA. Surely a huge untapped market for the boating industry.
 
There ae some black boaters around in the US. This August we picked up a buoy in an almost deserted Little Harbour, Jost Van Dyke. Almost immediately a Moorings cat came around the headland and also picked up a buoy. The crew were all black, a fact we remarked upon as being unusual.

Shortly after several more Moorings boats arrived, all crewed entirely by blacks. Something very unusual was clearly going on. Within an hour every buoy was occupied by a similar boats.

It turned out to be the Black Boaters of America annual convention. They organise a whole flotilla from the Moorings everywhere and fill up the boats with individuals from all over the US.

We had a great time with them all -one of the best nights of the holiday in fact- and got towed around the harbour when our outboard starter cord parted. As soon as we started rowing anywhere a dinghy would appear from nowhere and tow us wherever we wanted to go.

Lovely bunch of people, I wonder if there is a similar UK organisation?

Maybe manufacturers should put gold fittings all over them, get some Bling on the boats.

Having heard on the news etc. about similar organisations over here such as the Black Police Federation I have wondered if that can be classed as racist. Can you imagine the fuss if we set up a White Boaters Association?
 
I noticed a statistic the other day in one of the tabloids. Apparently more than 50% of the babies born in london last year were to mothers who were not born in UK

I reckon British racial identity may become something of a joke in the next 20 years.

If you look at the history of the UK perhaps it always was

Picts . Britons, Scots(From Ireland ) , Vikings , Angles , Romans and their colonials, Pakistanis , Russian Jews , Eskimos , Indians the many black slaves absorbed and vanished into the population after the abolishment of slavery ,British Empire colonial aftermath.

I note that there are currently 400 languages spoken in London


So what is a British man let alone an English man . is it just the area culture and the accent at the time ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
We've been here before in a slightly different way. Then it was about positive promotion of this and other pastimes to specific ethnic groups just because they are under represented. That notion appeared to spring from the typical PC view that it must be because they are being discriminated against. Typical of the utter boll*cks you get from certain quarters.

The fact seems to me to be very simple. Sailing/boating just doesn't appeal and reading anything else into the situation is a waste of time and very inflamatory, not to say insulting to those who have no racist feelings. How many black or Asian swimmers do you see in international competition? How often do you meet non white climbers and fell walkers?

You will gather from all this that I just don't think that proportionality is of any importance. Just let folk get on with the things they enjoy and stop imagining hidden agendas where there are none.

(Not suggesting the original post was anything other than just an interesting observation.)
 
What about midgets and dwarves? I cannot honestly say i have ever seen one sailing or motorboating, have you?
I would have thought that in a lightweight dinghy they would have a major advantage. Although on some of the large cruisers they would have to have little boxes to stand on.
There should be a government fund set up to encourage them.
 
Didn't a severely handicapped person recently sail across the channel single handed. I believe the boat was specially kitted out for her.
 
This we have always been a "melting pot" and there is no such thing as english/british is a piece of PC propaganda.

The Saxons Angles Picts Danes, Celts etc were all northern european tribes. Essentially the same race with different cultures.
Until 30 years ago, the last large scale invasion of Britain was the Normans (another north european tribe) almost 1000 years ago.

Immigration on the recent scale is unprecedented in this country.

I make no value judgements as to whether large scale immigration is a good idea or not, but I am irritated by the proponents of mass immigration distorting history to support their case.
 
the problem is that Tony blair brings everyone in to the uk and is paying for the autoroute from Nigeria

Why not swap a part of say Algeria for the UK then all british could move there and all the africans can sign on in the UK?

Cant understand why i cant visit a doctor get social security when others can and ive ived in the UK for more than 800 years!
