I am thinking of having a go at a couple of the easier RORC races in August and September which are run across the channel. I’ve got a fairly well equipped in not terribly racy boat in a Bavaria 40 Ocean (with Spinnaker) which is certainly sound in a blow. Were taking her to Cork week in a couple of weekends for a bit of round the cans so we should have worked out most of her snags by then. I’ve also recently bought a RORC 8 man life raft and most of the other small bits of safety kit, which I believe is required.

My question is it just a case of sending off the entry form?

And what is RORC racing like for someone starting?

Comments on the above gratefully received.

Regards

Alistair

Come and join us!

There are are couple of things you'll need.

A rating ticket. It's very simple really. See www.rorcrating.com for all the information and contacts.

Get in touch with RORC on www.rorc.org for an entry form. You will have to get the boat up to ORC Special Regulations catagory 3. The Special Regulations stipulate what emergency equipment you must carry and seem pretty onerous at the time. Though with reflection they are all sensible seamanlike requirements. eg: softwood plugs attached to the relevent seacocks, taught guardrails, all heavy weights secured etc.

Incidentally, I don't think the RORC fleet is as competitive as the JOG one!

See you on the start line.

very much looking forward to it. Am in the process of getting a rating at the moment for Round Island and Cork week so hopefully got that one solved.

Was thinking of doing the Cherbourg run (cruised it a couple of times already) and then the Myth of Malham.

What you think.

You should check to see if there is a feeder race from your area to Cork. I know there is a feeder race from St Malo to Cork on July 8th.
As for normal offshore racing, most races have a cruising class which levels the playing field. A good book for learning a bit about the offshore stuff is Stuarts Quarries Offshore Race Crew Manual. It describes all crew positions, boat preperation, etc.

Enjoy

In my diary the Myth of Malham starts on 23 August and the Cherbourg race is on 20 September.

The Myth of Malham is to St Quay, which is quite a haul on a non bank holiday weekend, you'd be advised to warn the crew that they will need Monday off too.

Personally, I won't be doing it, as there is no way we can make it back from the Bayona Race in time. Will be up for the thrash across to Cherbourg though.

Please e-mail me at mike_wilczynski@hotmail.com

Have fun!!

Hi,

Check out the How to race your cruiser article in the June edition of YM.
There are some useful telephone numbers at the end of the article.
