From last night's talk by Liza Copeland at the Cruising Association. On the subject of spouses who are not keen on crossing oceans:

Have you been to many of these? I joined the CA at SIBS and was planning to attend some of these lectures. Whats the general setup?

Hi Alex (and Clive)

I've only just joined the CA (August) and last night was the first lecture we have been to. I went to the new members evening last week, and found it an enjoyable event - a guided tour of the facilities (v.good) and plenty of opportunity to chat.

As you probably know, the talk/lecture program is published in the CA magazine, and is on the website (www.cruising.org.uk). Most Wednesdays and Thursdays have talks, split between technical (sail tuning, engines, C-Map and meteorology are all covered in the next couple of months) and cruising/travelogue.

Non-members can attend. I booked up a few weeks ago using the form from the mag, but I noticed people turning up & paying on the night. The talks start at 7.00 - last night's finished at about 9.15 (with a 20 min interval) which I gather is a little longer than normal. If you wanted food beforehand, the CA do good value meals. Last nights talk (Cruising for Couples) was well attended (c50?) - I would guess that events such as the Hanson Lecture (in a couple of weeks time) with Rod Heikel will be very well attended - we're also booked up for that one. I think quite a number of people probably stayed for a yarn afterwards, but we hit the road back to Cambridge straight away.

You could book a "cabin" at CA house if you wanted to stay overnight - these look basic but comfortable, and at £22/night per person b&b, are good value. (May be useful if you've over-indulged on the reasonably priced beer).

Hope this helps

John

Thanks for that - I quite like the look of the 2 lectures next week, and the sail trimming and tweaking one looks interesting. We will prob turn up on the night rather than book as lifes a bit hectic at the moment. I work in Dagenham so limehouse is a only quick (ha-ha) few miles up the road.
Unfortunately we couldn't attend the new members evening. I guess we'll see you there next week.

Do you know how many guests per member can come along, or is it unlimited.

Thanks for that John.

Was also curious about the lectures - joined at the Boat Show in September. Last nights lecture was actually one I wanted to attend. Good excuse dragging Mrs Yanita along, and getting her a bit more involved in the boat. After all, we'll be spending (a lot) more time afloat in the near future.
Alas, "real life" (work) interfered last night - doesn't it always?

Sorry Alex - I don't know the member to guest ratio. A quick call to CA house should confirm - they've been v.helpful so far when I've spoken to them.

BTW, is it your Moody S31 that is appearing for sale on line (1995, based Harwich)?

Last nights lecture was mostly good - plenty of solid info about equipping your boat for the cruisng life etc, but got a bit "holiday snappish" towards the end.

Wouldn't have minded that at all.
Would show Mrs Yanita - not the keenest of sailors - that there's more to it than F7-8 in the Channel.
